BAKING
Bill knew I wasnât big on holiday celebrations (except for Halloween). He also knew that to get me somewhat into the spirit of any season was by baking. It didnât matter if it was cookies, cakes, or pies; it always lifted my emotional state. Of course, it had nothing to do with the act of baking, but more so the company I kept.
A few days before Christmas, Bill called and said he was bringing supplies for a day of baking. âWhy are you always trying to get me in a good mood for the holidays?â I asked.
âWhy canât I just be trying to get you in a good mood?â he shot back. âI know how you feel around the holidays and I donât want to see you sink any deeper than normal.â
I appreciated his concern for my mental health and loved the fact he checked in on me on a regular basis. After letting out a loud sigh, I told him Iâd be waiting for his arrival.
I was shaking my head on my front porch as I watched him pull bags of items out of his back seat. âYou know you can give me a hand with these,â he shouted to which I clapped in jest. âVery funny,â he smirked as he walked up my pathway. âNow, go grab the rest of the supplies.â
Bill had preheated my oven and unpacked most of the bags by the time I entered the kitchen. âHow? How did you do that so fast?âI stuttered, waving at the supplies on my counter. âI was only gone a minute!â
A soft chuckle escaped Billâs lips. âYou should know by now I donât waste time getting things done.â His blue eyes glistened as he grabbed the rest of the bags from my clenched fists.
I huffed as I pulled out my baking sheets and cake pans from beneath my counter. âDonât forget the cooking spray. Do you really want to waste our time if in the end we canât consume the fruits of our labor?â he stated. I sighed, rolled my eyes, and shook my head.
Bill looked down at me with an annoyed side-eye. âCome on, Cubby. We need to get you out of this funk and this is one way to do it.â
I muttered something inappropriate under my breath. Bill immediately heard and appropriately reacted. âNow, now, Cubby; thereâs no need for such epithets. We both know full-well you only curse when close to rock bottom so itâs a good thing Iâm here. Itâs time to nip this in the bud.â
Bill grabbed a pinch of flour and flicked it in my direction. I pulled a face as the white powder landed on my forehead. âJeez, buddy; you could have taken an eye out!â I exclaimed, annoyed.
In playful retaliation, Bill grabbed a fistful of flour and proceeded to smash it on my face. My mouth dropped in shock and annoyance. He let out a sigh of distress as tears formed in my eyes.
He wrapped his huge arms around me and gave me a tight squeeze.
