Chapter Four
Men. She didn't even understand her pa, let alone Jude Morgan. Not that she cared what he was really like, she did notice how good-looking he was in his tight pants and gun belt slung low on his narrow hips. Heaven help her. She couldn't take her eyes off him. His dark skin and chiseled face and high cheekbones made him resemble an Indian, but his blue eyes belied that fact. The little he'd touched her set her on fire, with heat starting down low and moving up to her breastbone. She always turned away when the warmth reached her neck and cheeks.
She'd better watch her step, or she'd be in deep trouble.
While Maud was busy with household chores, Addie walked out the back door, heading to the barn. Sonny should be tidying up the inside, and she needed to keep an eye on him. Given half a chance, he'd turn into a slacker, for sure. Every bone in his body was lazy. It was like pulling teeth to get him to do his work.
"Sonny? You in here?" She called out as she entered the dark space.
Two horses still stood in their stall. They should be out in the corral or fenced back pasture.
"Sonny?"
Shivers ran down her back when he appeared in front of her, standing too close. Whispering, he said, "You looking for me, honey?"
Taking a step back, Addie glared at him. "Why are these mares still in here? You know they should be outside. Take care of that, will you?"
She turned to walk away, but he caught her arm and swung her around, pulling her to his body. One arm circled her waist and jerked her very close, holding her tightly, chest to toe.
Still whispering, he said, "Let me show you something I bet you never done beforeâ¦"
Before he could finish his sentence, Addie saw Jude stalk in, grab Sonny by the back collar, and throw him to the hard packed earthen floor. Before Sonny could get to his feet, Jude kicked him in the ribs with the toe of his boot. As Sonny rolled on the floor, Jude reached down, grabbed his arms, and hauled him to his feet. Then he socked Sonny in his right jaw. Before Sonny fell once more, Jude threw a left punch to the other jaw, and Sonny went down like a ton of coal.
Jude stood back, breathing hard, glaring at the man on his back. Addie thought she'd faint from the violence she'd witnessed and the sick feeling in her stomach. Jude frightened her to death. Would he ever hit a woman with such force? She shuddered and wrapped her arms around her waist.
Turning to her, he said, "Who does the doctoring around here?"
"Mâ¦Maud."
"Will she go to the bunkhouse and help him?"
"Yâ¦yes, I think so."
"I'm going to haul him over there, and if you'd go alert Maud, I'll wait for her."
"Yes. All right."
Before Addie could walk away, Jude stopped her. "Addie? I'm sorry he touched you. I'm not sorry I beat him up.
