CHAPTER SIX

DAVIDSON complained briefly when Chilton made the decision to move on to a safer place to stop for the midday meal. But Olde gave his partner no support, having returned command to the captain. Benson and Kelly were pushed ahead again and it was two hours later when the wagons were halted at a spot chosen by the scouts. It was on the brow of a low hill that commanded an extensive view in every direction. Exposed, but making it difficult for a surprise attack to be launched. Thus, all were able to eat together without the need to assign men to sentry positions. Steele ate from his own supplies while the rest were given rations from the chuck wagon. No objection was made when he helped himself to coffee. The meal was cold and sparse, the men eating alone or in groups in the shade of the wagons. There was little talk and a great deal of tension. But this was due to the incident with Bill Blue and its possible repercussions rather than to any resentment between the various factions making up the escort. On the two-hour journey from the dust bowl to the afternoon camp, those who had not been close enough to see or hear what happened at the ravine mouth were told the story. And, from lack of interest in such abstracts as motives, or because they were too concerned with the possibility of imminent Indian attack, most of the men seemed satisfied with the outcome and did not feel the need to delve deeper. One exception was Lieutenant Benson, who throughout the short meal break seemed on the verge of opening a conversation with Steele. But the impassive Virginian offered him no encouragement and the blond-haired young officer remained silent and dissatisfied.
