CHAPTER TEN
Elderly Wisdom
âYouâre yanking my fucking chain, arenât ya?â Rush asks, sending me a glare. âThereâs no way in hell Iâm buying this overly dramatic story.â
I shake my head. âI wish, man, but itâs true. Every last detail.â
âI can attest to it,â Niko chimes in, tossing a thumb toward me. âThis dufus came in here and got wasted while crying to Elle about it. Can you believe that shit?â
Rush tosses his head back and barks a loud laugh. âOf fucking course youâd make it about Elle.â
âBullshit,â Niko refutes him, huffing. âAce made it all about Elle when he confided in her instead of one of his best friends.â
âI apologized for that already.â I glare at his whining ass. âI told you I was hoping for some womanly wisdom.â
âAnd did you get it?â Niko lifts a challenging brow.
I look down into my glass of Stella Artois. âI donât remember.â
Both of those fuckers burst out laughing, and I join them. Things have been better since Rowan and I non-talked. Having Carmen around and us working to get settled into my childhood home has taken my focus from the bad and turned it toward the good. I get to spend every day with my daughter, and sheâs pretty damn amazing, much like her mother when we were younger.
Carmen started the same middle school I went to as a kid on Tuesday, and this Saturday, I plan to introduce her to Ma. Sure, I could tell her over the phone, but that seems cruel. So does making her wait a week to find out sheâs a Grandma, but I donât have much of a choice. I want her to be able to spend time with Carmen, and a weekend day is the best option.
Rush claps me on the back. âWell, fuck. Iâm not sure I know the right thing to say here. Congratulations, for sure, but beyond that, Iâm no fucking help.â
âItâs cool, man.â I wave him off. âCarâs amazing, and weâre doing great. Itâs her ma thatâs taking most of the heatâ from the both of us.â
âImagine that,â Niko says, propping his elbows on the bar. âAce has a kid, who he had no part in naming, and he legit gets to nickname her Car.â
âThat is fucking cool.â Rush bobs his head, tapping my arm. âHey, why donât you and the kid come for dinner? Alyssaâs fan-fucking-tastic with emotional shit.â
âWe could do that,â I reply, sliding my glass toward Niko and standing. âI definitely want everyone to meet her, and Alyssa could probably be an amazing role model.â
âWhat about her mom?â Niko asks, curious. âAre they even talking?â
âThey are.â I sigh heavily. âRowan picked her up for dinner last night. I had to push Carmen into it, and that annoys me. She has a right to be mad, but that woman raised her, so thereâs a fine line, and sheâs teetering on the edge.â
âYeah, but look how she played you two,â he points out, wiping down the bar with his towel. âI donât know how someone could get over something like that.
