As it turned out, it could be quite hard. Even with Jay having prepared himself with a slew of internet tutorials, he was not sure anything could ready a person for the shocking instability of a canoe.

He was suddenly glad for the life jackets for two reasons: their lifesaving capabilities might come in handy; more importantly, Jolie encased in the puffy orange marshmallow looked nothing like she had in that dress yesterday.

Her hair was sensibly tamed, clipped at her neck. Her poor welted face was in the shadow of a ball cap. Her legs looked long and lean and sun-browned, but once she was seated, he wouldn’t have to look at that particular temptation for the rest of the outing.

But even getting seated was not simple.

The canoes were tied along both sides of the dock, and he had been assigned a red one. For a no-contact sport, Jay noticed her hands were pretty tight on his as he stood on the dock and tried to keep her and the canoe steady at the same time as she lowered herself into it.

The boat rocked alarmingly as she found the seat behind her. When it had steadied, Jay handed her the breakfast things to tuck in, and for a moment it seemed all would be lost as the vessel dipped hard toward him as she reached for the items.

She laughed and the morning took on all kinds of dangers that seemed more immediate than a capsized canoe. After she’d gotten the breakfast items organized, he dared to hand her a paddle, and there was more rocking when she reached out to take it.

Finally, he released the vessel—which he already pretty thoroughly hated—from its mooring, and used his paddle to balance on the gunnels to take his place at the back of the canoe, or the stern, as the videos had called it.

He experimentally used his paddle to push off from the dock, then dipped it into the water and pulled it back.

The canoe shockingly obeyed and they moved away from the dock.

“I’ll paddle this side, and you paddle that side,” he called to her.

Really, once they were moving forward it seemed pretty simple as long as they sat ramrod straight on the extremely uncomfortable seats, and didn’t make any sudden movements.

“Talk about team building,” he muttered, as they headed out and tried to coordinate their paddles.

“Oh, but this is so romantic.”

He grunted disapprovingly.

“I mean,” she caught herself, “the romance is of the activity, not us. Look how quiet it is, the glide through the water, the morning light on the vineyards. It’s wonderful.”

It wasn’t really. It was hard work to paddle, impossible to steer, and even breathing the wrong way made the vessel sway threateningly to and fro in the water.

He felt overly responsible for Jolie’s safety. When a motorboat roared by, they nearly capsized in the wake it left behind it.

But, despite the challenges, they both got the hang of it, and were soon skimming the water and enjoying the novel view of the shoreline.
