When it comes to a cat fight,

always root for the underdog.

“Well, if it isn’t Clair Ivars calling me from the Heron Estates.” I sat in my immaculate guest room and gawked at Brian through the phone.

“Impressive hit,” I said.

“Caller ID,” Brian corrected.

“Ah. Listen, Brian, I need your help.”

“I knew it. You slept with him.”

“I didn’t sleep with him.”

“Yet.”

“Brian.”

“Saving it for the marriage?” I started to cry. And, like most men, Brian can’t deal with crying women.

“Clair? Are you crying? Oh, Jesus. What? What?”

“I messed everything up,” I wailed.

“Clair. Did you use a condom?”

“I didn’t sleep with him, Brian. I’m talking about Rachel.”

“You slept with Rachel?”

“Brian.”

“Sorry. What are you talking about?”

“You have to find Rachel and bring her here.” I didn’t have to be psychic to see Brian on the other end, fingering his spoon.

“I can’t do that, Clair. I don’t even know her,” Brian argued. I was ready for this and mentally stamped the word GUILT on his aura.

“Tough shit,” I said. “You got me into this, now you’re going to help me get out.”

“Just come home. Just get in your little Saturn and drive home.”

“My little Saturn is totaled.”

“What?”

“I was in a car accident.”

“Oh, God. Clair. We’re city people. This is why we don’t drive. Are you hurt?”

“I’m okay. Physically anyway. But—the Saturn isn’t. I crashed it in the woods and they can’t find it.” Just saying the words out loud set me off on a giggle. It was ludicrous. How on earth could anyone not have seen an upside down Saturn in the woods?

“What’s so funny?” Brian demanded.

“If a Saturn crashes in the woods and no one is there to hear it—” I couldn’t even finish the sentence. I laid down on the ivory quilt and howled. Brian laughed, too, although his was the polite garden-variety laughter while mine was buckets and buckets of wildflower seeds.

“Sorry,” I said when I had finally calmed down. “I’ve been a little stressed. There’s more too—about the accident—some really strange things, but I’d rather tell you in person. How soon do you think you can get Rachel here?” Brian sighed and bared his teeth in the spoon, looking for stray bits of food. I stamped the word GUILT into his spoon.

“How am I supposed to find Rachel?” he said at last.

“Jack mentioned something about her parents. I can find out where they live and you can start there. In the meantime, I’m going to leave her a message that I think will do the trick. If we’re lucky, once she hears it, she’ll find you.” There was another long silence as Brian wrestled with helping me or blowing me off. I played my ace.

“Okay, Brian, I’ll be honest with you. I wasn’t going to tell you this—but you’ve left me no option.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You have to swear you won’t tell anyone.”

“I swear.”

“When Rachel gets here—I think we’re going to need to have a little séance.” Brian’s silence said it all. His body was probably going into shock. Brian was a freak for séances.
