When it comes to a cat fight,
always root for the underdog.
âWell, if it isnât Clair Ivars calling me from the Heron Estates.â I sat in my immaculate guest room and gawked at Brian through the phone.
âImpressive hit,â I said.
âCaller ID,â Brian corrected.
âAh. Listen, Brian, I need your help.â
âI knew it. You slept with him.â
âI didnât sleep with him.â
âYet.â
âBrian.â
âSaving it for the marriage?â I started to cry. And, like most men, Brian canât deal with crying women.
âClair? Are you crying? Oh, Jesus. What? What?â
âI messed everything up,â I wailed.
âClair. Did you use a condom?â
âI didnât sleep with him, Brian. Iâm talking about Rachel.â
âYou slept with Rachel?â
âBrian.â
âSorry. What are you talking about?â
âYou have to find Rachel and bring her here.â I didnât have to be psychic to see Brian on the other end, fingering his spoon.
âI canât do that, Clair. I donât even know her,â Brian argued. I was ready for this and mentally stamped the word GUILT on his aura.
âTough shit,â I said. âYou got me into this, now youâre going to help me get out.â
âJust come home. Just get in your little Saturn and drive home.â
âMy little Saturn is totaled.â
âWhat?â
âI was in a car accident.â
âOh, God. Clair. Weâre city people. This is why we donât drive. Are you hurt?â
âIâm okay. Physically anyway. Butâthe Saturn isnât. I crashed it in the woods and they canât find it.â Just saying the words out loud set me off on a giggle. It was ludicrous. How on earth could anyone not have seen an upside down Saturn in the woods?
âWhatâs so funny?â Brian demanded.
âIf a Saturn crashes in the woods and no one is there to hear itââ I couldnât even finish the sentence. I laid down on the ivory quilt and howled. Brian laughed, too, although his was the polite garden-variety laughter while mine was buckets and buckets of wildflower seeds.
âSorry,â I said when I had finally calmed down. âIâve been a little stressed. Thereâs more tooâabout the accidentâsome really strange things, but Iâd rather tell you in person. How soon do you think you can get Rachel here?â Brian sighed and bared his teeth in the spoon, looking for stray bits of food. I stamped the word GUILT into his spoon.
âHow am I supposed to find Rachel?â he said at last.
âJack mentioned something about her parents. I can find out where they live and you can start there. In the meantime, Iâm going to leave her a message that I think will do the trick. If weâre lucky, once she hears it, sheâll find you.â There was another long silence as Brian wrestled with helping me or blowing me off. I played my ace.
âOkay, Brian, Iâll be honest with you. I wasnât going to tell you thisâbut youâve left me no option.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âYou have to swear you wonât tell anyone.â
âI swear.â
âWhen Rachel gets hereâI think weâre going to need to have a little séance.â Brianâs silence said it all. His body was probably going into shock. Brian was a freak for séances.
