Bruce Oldfield made Sapphire's dress with light blue buttons on dark blue silk jersey.

David McCallum, the heart-throb Illya Kuryakin from The Man from Uncle, and I became Sapphire and Steel a year after the New Avengers had ridden into the sunset. As Sapphire, I could stop time with my alien skills and flashing blue-lensed eyes, and Steel, with his extra-terrestrial mega-brain, sorted out the evil that stalked our planet. For the next two years we worked in a dark studio with special effects and eerie, thrilling stories that scared our young audience. P. J. Hammond, the writer, had tapped into a vein of uneasy fiction where children vanished from photographs to re-appear in real life as grey wraiths, and a dead soldier of the Great War haunted a railway station where he had said his last goodbye before being killed. Some of the stories tested the notion of time past and present; with McCallum and our clever directors applying their incisive deductive powers we steered a path of logic through a complex web of intrigue. Sapphire wore blue clothes of strange and unfashionable design, because she was an alien and had no idea of, or interest in, the fashion of the day. She and Steel looked vaguely normal, although Steel was unable to behave like a human as he had no emotions and no empathy with the people he had come to help. There was a children’s television comic called Look-In: if you did look in, and thousands did, you would have seen us as a cartoon strip. It is very gratifying to be drawn as a cartoon character. I have kept a pile of the comics, and also an original front cover which depicts Mork and Mindy before Robin Williams became a movie star, Bob Geldof in his Boomtown Rats era, Christopher Reeve as Superman and us: a portrait of the favourite heroes of the time.
