CHAPTER 7

The morning’s eastbound train rolled into the Union Pacific’s massive station in Omaha at 2:40 in the morning. As it slowly rolled to a stop at the platform, there were still several waiting relatives for the train, including Molly Ward and her fiancé, Andrew Donovan. Molly was watching anxiously to see her oldest sister, Mary step from the train. She’d only seen her sister twice since she’d married John Fitzpatrick and he’d taken the job in Julesburg, Colorado.

John stepped onto the platform first carrying two travel bags then assisted Mary onto the wooden platform. She spotted Molly and grinned as they walked quickly to each other and embraced as John shook his future brother-in-law’s hand.

Mary scanned the platform as she asked, “Molly, where’s papa?”

“He’s at home, finally getting some sleep. He hasn’t been getting much rest since Emily was lost when she went on that blasted hunting trip to Wyoming. He’s blaming himself for what happened because he was the one who got her the position.”

John turned quickly to look at his wife as Mary said excitedly, “Molly, but that’s not true. I don’t believe Emily died. When we were on the train, another passenger who lives in Laramie told a story about a redheaded nanny and a boy who were rescued after they’d been abandoned by the boy’s uncle, so he could steal the boy’s inheritance in Omaha.”

Molly’s eye’s widened as she turned to her fiancé and exclaimed, “We’ve got to tell papa!”

Mary was already smiling when she turned to her stunned husband and grinned before the men grabbed bags and they all scurried across the platform.

It was a gorgeous late summer morning and showed no indications of the turmoil that would erupt before the sun completed its transit and settled in the west.

Even though he’d stayed up listening to Mary until almost four o’clock, Dennis Patrick Ward reached his office earlier than usual, arriving at 6:40 that morning after leaving instructions with Mary that someone must be at the station to meet each arriving train from the West that had connections to Laramie, Wyoming.

After Mary had convinced him that Emily and the boy were alive and were returning to Omaha, he was relieved and exultant and now needed to let someone in the company know. But the president was gone, so after he arrived in his own small office on factory floor, he quickly began walking to the main offices across the large yard. Even though he was now a manager, he still felt awkward entering the offices where all the bigwigs patrolled the corridors.

Dennis entered the large building and walked up the stairs to the offices of the vice presidents, unable to find anyone. He pulled out his pocket watch. It was after seven o’clock, so someone should have been here by now. He didn’t know who
