I found Leah fully dressed lying on one of the loungers by the pool. She was the only one there.
I hurried over. âLeah, are you all right?â
She opened her eyes and peered up at me. âAs all right as you might expect.â
âYou poor darling.â I pulled the closest sunbed next to hers and held her hand. âWhat can I do to help?â
âWhat can anyone do?â She sighed.
Iâd promised not to pry or at least wait for her to talk, but I couldnât hold back any longer. Would she give me an accurate description of her meeting with Mason? She wouldnât have a clue Iâd heard every word.
âHow was Mason last night?â
âJittery. Contrite. Almost humble.â
âIs that why he wanted to meet, to apologise and make it up?â
âOnly in part. I think he was more interested in what Belinda had brought him.â
I frowned pretending not to understand. âBelinda? She went with you?â
âOf course. He is her father.â
âSo, are you getting back together?â I held my breath.
âItâs not as simple as that. He canât leave here and Iâm not staying here. Maybe once heâs cleared his name and comes back to London, well weâll see.â
âOh darling, can you forgive him? Do you want to?â
âHe said it was all done to protect me.â
âI guess that could be true. He was mixed up with some unsavoury characters.â I stood up pulling on her hand. âCome. Letâs have a stiff drink at the bar and let Aunty Andrea cheer you up. You will have to decide which of the two men in your life youâre going to choose. Exciting Mason or boring old Bill. Iâll help you forget both of them and after a few drinks you wonât even remember Mason and his crooked clients and their threats. They canât get to you here.â
Leah had no option but to scramble to her feet and let me lead her back inside. Iâd ask nothing more about the meeting but let it rest.
I carried the drinks back from the bar to a table next to the window. Leah sat watching the dust motes float through the air.
âJust one more question. Are you meeting up with him again?â
âMason?â
âWho else?â Leah could be so pedantic at times.
âNo, nothing planned.â
âSo, that leaves me to entertain you the rest of the time we are here. What shall it be? We can go for a walk in Kings Park.â I watched Leah shudder. âOr a trip to the Mint to watch them pouring gold, or how about the zoo? Itâs not only for the kids you know.â
âPouring real gold? That sounds cool.â Belindaâs voice behind me made me jump. I needed to work on my nerves.
The kid plonked a large glass of bright green juice on the table and sat down. âWe should do something in Perth. Seems such a waste. Any clubs with some decent music? Or are they still in the dinosaur era down under?â
âDo shush!â Leah looked around fearful. âRemember weâre guests here so keep it down.â
âYeah, yeah whatever.â Belindaâs waving hands sent her drink flying, flooding the table and dripping onto the carpet.
