THE SHALLOWS

‘Did you read all these?’ Sarah asked one night. They’d become accustomed to reading quite late in the dim light they had. Aria had the vague thought that maybe that was the cause of her headaches.

Sarah had her eyes fixed on one of Grayson Matthews’ journals.

Aria put down The Old Man and the Sea. She’d finished Moby Dick weeks ago.

‘Some of them,’ she replied, ‘Why?’

Sarah seemed reluctant to reply.

‘If you’re not going to tell me, don’t bring it up,’ she sniped, opening her novel again.

She sensed Sarah bristle next to her on the old couch.

‘I just didn’t want to scare you,’ she explained faintly, and then, more assertively, ‘At least I’m making an effort to figure out what happened here.’ She waved the journal around. ‘Hemingway isn’t going to give you a way off this damned island.’

Aria shot daggers at her.

‘I don’t care what happened here,’ she hissed. ‘I don’t want to know what happened to Grayson Matthews, or anyone else. And we only need a way off this damned island because you had the remarkably stupid idea to visit an abandoned research site that hasn’t been touched for decades without telling anyone.’

Sarah pursed her lips, nodded once, and placed the journal on the side table.

‘Got it,’ she said, standing to leave the room. ‘Enjoy Hemingway.’

Aria glared at the journal, scooped up a blanket from the back of the couch, and stalked off to sleep in the other bedroom. For the first time since they’d been stranded here, she really felt alone.
