Chapter Twenty-One

Cassandra laughed. "You think I'd have an answer to such a simple question." She crushed her paper coffee cup in a clenched fist.

"It's going to be dangerous, isn't it?"

Samson nodded. "Yes."

"Neither of us has any idea how to defeat this thing, do we?"

"Well, the book…" Samson began, and then shrugged. "No, not a clue."

Earlier, Samson had called her an honorable person who'd shut herself away from the world and was only living half a life. Memnon said she possessed a gift and blasted her for her half-life existence as well. Maybe she should listen. Rather than fear her powers, she should use them to help others.

Truthfully, she was tired of running. Worn down from carrying around her guilt. Staying in Salem and defeating the evil might offer the chance to defeat her demons. Besides, the idea of a book imbued with Seabhac's life source and a knife containing souls, fascinated her.

"You do know I have next to no control over my powers, right?"

"I'll help you. I've had experience."

The corner of Samson's lips lifted into a crooked smile and Cassandra thought she'd agree to anything. But years of denying who she was and what she was capable of was a pattern not easily broken.

She stared into the distance and lifted a shoulder. "I'm not sure. I just can't commit."

She felt rather than saw Samson's frown of frustration. When he spoke, his voice was controlled and quiet. "Fine. I guess I can understand. Meanwhile, at least do me a favor and look at the book?"

Curiosity battled wariness and Cassandra answered before logic took over. "Sure."

"Great." Samson stood quickly, before she changed her mind. "It's in the Hummer."

"You keep an antique book in your vehicle?"

"It's better than leaving it at home." He frowned. "Maybe it's not safe to look at the book in public. I should take you home and let you check it out."

"It's just a book, what do you think will happen?"

His glare seared into her. "Just a book. Come on. You can say that even after your dream and everything I told you?"

Cassandra shuffled her feet and squinted up at Samson, who towered above her, blocking the sun. "For all I know it was just a dream, and I have no way to verify what you've told me." Cassandra didn't know why, but she felt the need to push Samson's buttons.

Samson snorted. "Thanks. Why not just call me a liar."

"That's not what I meant."

"That's what it sounded like." He ran a hand through his hair and shifted his feet. "Are you willing to look at the book?"

She stood and brushed the dirt off her butt. "I'll look."

"Fine. Then let's go."

Without waiting for her, Samson set a long-legged stride towards the Hummer, which sat on the edge of the Commons.

Idiot. Why do all men have to be such idiots?

Cassandra stuck her tongue out at Samson's retreating back and leisurely followed. By the time she caught up, he was holding the door open and tapping his foot in an impatient rhythm. She smiled at him and climbed into the masculine, tank-like vehicle.
