RITES OF PASSAGE

i don’t know how i ended up in my 23rd migration around the sun posted up at Canticle Farm working for Joanna Macy - little blk girl from Atlanta tryna make guns into shovels, tryna plant trees, tryna hold ceremony, tryna disrupt environmental racism, tryna instigate pause, tryna heal my relationship with the earth, tryna love myself, tryna make spaces for black people to mourn, rest, grieve. not surprised that on that journey of black liberation and spiritual ecology, i ended up living in a community of initiation rooted in the work that reconnects practice and started supporting Joanna and Anne Symens-Bucher as the coordinator for what was being called Joanna’s last ten-day intensive.

what a gift those months were! what an honor to sit with Joanna each Tuesday, tears welling up in my eyes as i transcribed her voice through emails while she proclaimed poetry - what a privilege to learn alongside such an incredible teacher.

i ain’t know what i was getting myself into! i thought i was moving back to Atlanta to join a dance company, then i found myself at this intensive - what a vortex! what a reflective microcosm of where we are right now - what a difficult, hilarious gift from spirit. if only we could have found the dance of humor in us then - remember falling asleep hearthed by horsetail in the forest - coyotes singing us to sleep asking us to listen and be gentle on ourselves.

what an intimate, miraculous and significant moment to be able to bear witness to what happened during and after the intensive. and the truth of how painful it is when our child starts speaking back to us, starts telling us bout ourselves, starts deciding their own path. the rage when other folks tell you how you need to raise your child. the work was going through a rite of passage and dying was a part of that process. i trust that what transpired that summer, though in many ways disheartening and disorienting, was divine - it felt like the ultimate gift when a body of work asks to utilize its very prayer within its own practice - that it speaks to the strength of the work - and the big prayer that it is to practice reconnecting to one another in spite of living within an atmosphere crowded by unfathomable inequity and separation.

the future beings are asking us to get real intimate, buoyant, and joyous with our relationship to collapse, to deformation, to death. to be willing to surrender to mystery. how can we relax into death as a security? how can we care for death? how can we trust death as the one thing we know for sure happens to everything? decolonization will require decomposition, it’s gon require mushrooms, it’s gon require us to be in our dignity, it’s gon require us to revel.

i find myself surrendering to this study in revelations as an apprentice to death in a practice called Lead to Life.
