Frankie had been texting me pictures all day. It was nice he’d found something that excited him. The variety of architecture around New Orleans was crazy. It just wasn’t my thing.

However, once Frankie said that he wanted me to come and see a place he was seriously considering, I’d texted him to bring Darla over for dinner so we could talk about the prospects first.

“You’re cooking?” Gunner sniffed the air as he entered the kitchen.

“I’m not that bad,” I said.

“I’m helping.” The houseboy came in from the dining room. “Spicy shrimp and blackened chicken with potatoes and rice and beans. Cornbread?”

“No, rolls,” I vetoed. Cornbread was lovely but it didn’t go with everything.

“Biscuits.” The houseboy went to work.

I rolled my eyes.

“What’s all this about? We’re not moving out tomorrow,” Gunner said softly.

I frowned. “What? I like having you here.”

“I liked being here but it seems like that isn’t necessary anymore.” Gunner looked around.

“Is it Ivy? Greg is working with her. I think it’s the wedding stuff and maybe she’s getting more sensitive. Nothing super dangerous,” I said.

Gunner shook his head. “It’s not her. Matt was grieving his mother. His brother moved. He needed to be surrounded by friends. Now, it’s more like we’re guests here and we want our privacy in our own place.”

“Who isn’t giving you privacy?” I asked.

Chuckling, Gunner hugged me. “It’s not that. It’s your house. We want our space.”

“Are you engaged?” I asked.

Gunner blushed. “No, relax. I know Frankie is looking. We’re not leaving for a reason other than we’re ready.”

“You’re sure it’s not because of Paul? He’s not pushing to move in and I’m not dragging him in.” I checked the potatoes.

“It’s not him. He’s good for you. He loves you. He’s a good guy. People don’t stay in the same place all their life. It’s good to move on. Ivy and Brody might need their own space eventually.” Gunner sampled a potato. “Mmmm.”

“Thanks. The trick is lots of butter.” I turned down the heat. “Oh God, if the place empties out Greg will fill it with priests or former nuns or something.”

“Now he needs to move out,” Gunner said. “I like the guy but he’s floating between here and Mary Lou and the church. The guy is in limbo and he’s working like crazy to avoid his life.”

“Crap, you’re right. How did I not see that?” I asked.

“You’re too close. Having a team for your work is wonderful but you need a life. You need distance from your team so you can see if they are off their game. He’s good at what he does but he’s losing himself in the fight. He needs a life too. Monastic or married—something.” Gunner checked the chicken. “I think it’s done.”

“Thanks.” I took it out and cut into a piece. “Looks good.”

The doorbell rang.

“Damn it,” I said.

“I’ll get this. Go answer the door. Paul coming too?” Gunner teased.

“I cooked for an army. Everyone is invited,” I said.

I wanted to see everyone but Darla was the one I needed to get on the case.
