CHAPTER FIFTEEN

MARCUS

Two days later

Hours before the Witherhouse party

Could time go any slower? I wondered in frustration. It’s been two days since I last saw her. We’ve talked on the phone each night, and we’ve sent plenty of texts, but that’s just a tease. And I have three more meetings to attend before I can bust out of here so that we can have that drink before the party.

For the past five hours, I’d been stuck at my office at Koch Capital Advisors.

Before the markets opened, I’d done what I do every business day. I’d reviewed our fund’s current position by looking at yesterday’s reports from Jonathan, my best friend and portfolio manager. I’d met with my staff to discuss new trading opportunities. I’d pored over financial news, caught up on emails and phone calls, monitored the markets when they opened, adjusted trades, and considered new opportunities as they arose.

And that was just a slice of it.

I loved my job, but with Barbara back in my life, it was a struggle to stay focused on it, something Jon noted when we had lunch in my office two hours ago. My executive assistant, Harlow, had ordered takeout for us at the Capital Grille. Since Jon was a fitness freak like me, we each had the Maine lobster salad with a citrus vinaigrette and called it good.

In the fifteen minutes I had before my next meeting, I thought back to our lunch and recalled what had been said.

Because Jon’s insights were that important.
