Chapter 8
Michael jerked awake from the dead sleep and the hairs on the back of his head stood straight up. The wolf whined and growled inside him. Michael could feel its panic that transformed into his own.
The sheets were still stained from their love-making, and he could smell her scent, but it seemed fainter.
He rubbed the back of his neck. Something was deathly wrong.
“Holly?”
Caesar stood in the doorway, whining.
“What’s wrong, boy? Where’s Holly?”
Caesar ran out the door.
Michael jumped out of bed and followed his dog. “Holly? Holly?”
Jayden opened the door. His hair was messed up and he only wore a pair of jeans. “Dude, what are you yelling about?” He frowned. “Get some clothes on. Eleanor’s awake.”
“Something’s wrong with Holly.”
“How do you know?”
“I just do.” Michael raced down the stairs. “Holly?”
But his only answer was the sound of his pounding heart. Blood thumped between his ears.
Caesar clawed at the garage door. Michael whipped open the door. The Hummer was missing, and the garage door was open.
Footsteps came up behind him. “Saul’s gone.” Jayden’s bleak announcement tore at Michael’s heart.
“Eleanor, go back upstairs. Michael’s naked.”
“Stop being dramatic, Jayden. It’s not like I haven’t seen a naked man before.”
“Well, I don’t like you looking at anyone but me.” Jayden grabbed Michael’s arm. “Will you get some damn clothes on before I rip you apart?”
“Fine.” Michael broke his grasp.
Eleanor wasn’t even looking at him. She was busy opening cupboards. “Maybe they just went out for groceries. I don’t have much food for humans.”
Michael put his hand on the door jab. “Do you actually believe that?”
She sighed and sank on to a bar stool. “No, I donna.”
“You don’t have any evidence, Michael, that something’s wrong. You’re just oversensitive when it comes to Holly.”
Anger sizzled through Michael, and he growled.
Jayden lifted an eyebrow. “You’re not in control.”
Michael bit back a retort. “I need to call Holly.”
Luckily, Jayden’s phone rang before Michael’s temper got the better of him.
He glanced over at the counter. “Eleanor, did you do something with my phone?”
“No. Why?”
He motioned with his hand. “I left it on the counter.” He looked around the floor.
“I didn’t see it.”
Jayden walked back into the kitchen. “We have another problem.”
Michael straightened up. “What?”
Jayden stuffed his phone into his back pocket. “That was Betsy Hansen. She called to see if I knew where Derek was.”
Michael frowned. “He went to his mom’s and left? That’s weird.”
Jayden’s face turned grim. “No, you don’t understand. Derek never showed up at his mom’s.”
“Crap, Desmond.” Michael rubbed his forehead.
Eleanor looked between Michael and Jayden. “Do you think Holly or Derek found out somehow?”
His lungs and heart stopped. Michael dropped his arm and clenched his fist. “Shit, I need to check something out.”
He raced up the stairs two at time and charged into the bedroom. “Damn it!” His worst fears were realized. Holly’s gear was gone.
He grabbed his discarded jeans and shirt then yanked them on. He grabbed his socks and boots and put them on.
Eleanor and Jayden bolted into the room. “What’s wrong?” They both blurted.
