1.
The sheriff sat in his office listening for the bells that signaled High Noon. He polished his silver star and put it back on his shirt. He loaded his two silver pistols, a brand that was slowly winning the west one shot at a time or so he had heard from those travelers passing through from the dusty trails of the southwest.
The sheriff looked up when heard the sound of hooves approaching in the distance, and glanced out his window. He could see the waves crashing on the beach, the yellow sand, and the bright sunshine. He always hated showdowns, because they not only disturbed the peace of his small town, but they took him to a dark and evil place. A place he didnât like to go, but in this day and age he was forced to go there time and time again. How many showdowns at noon had he won? How many times had he been on the end of a barrel with a bullet in the chamber waiting for him? How many times had he stared down death in order to keep the peace? He didnât have an exact number in his head, but he knew it was a lot.
The bells rang.
It was High Noon.
The sheriff stood up and put on his hat.
He slid his silver pistols into their brown leather holsters, each of them sporting smiling devils. Above the devils were small openings leading to pockets filled with holy water.
2.
Outside, in the salty sea air, two creatures rode up on their horses and stopped.
They dismounted in front of the jail, and began pacing, scaly trigger fingers twitching over their holstered guns.
One of the creatures called out to the sheriff, âYou in there, yellow?â
It was cliché as anything; but it was all this creature could muster as the words slithered over its forked tongue and out of its mouth.
3.
The tall sheriff stood on skinny legs that equaled the rest of his lanky frame. He was dressed in dark blue from his hat to his boots. He believed in the uniformity of color, and he liked the way one solid color looked when it ran together like it did on him.
He kicked his boots against the legs of the desk one time for each boot (habit or for luck, at this point not even the sheriff knew), and his pure silver spurs jingled each time he did it. He put on his gun belt, and let the guns hang low on his sides. He found this position best for a quick draw.
He walked over to the door and stopped. He looked at his pet parrot perched on a ledge beside the door. This birdâs normal color was red, but when it was scared or frightened, like now, it would change color, rapidly. It was currently running through a rainbow of colors, flipping to green, to yellow, to blue, to black, to white, and then back to red. When it reached red, it ran back through the colors again.
