Chapter 17

John stifled a yawn as he filled the kettle. He had been out late the previous night. It had been the annual prize-giving of the camera club and one of his photographs had come top in the ‘landscape’ section. It was the first time he had won the award and he felt justly proud of the fact. After the meeting, one of the other club members had invited him round to his house and it had been close to midnight when he had gone to bed.

The sun was already streaming in through the kitchen window. It was unusual for him to get up so late, but he felt the previous night’s event justified it. He made himself a mug of tea and wandered into the lounge. The winning photograph was now perched in the centre of his settee, in full view. He picked it up and studied it as he sipped his tea. It was one of the photographs he had taken on holiday and he couldn’t help feeling pleased with the result. It was a picture of the seashore he had taken close to Brillport. He had entered it in the competition without thinking it might win. He made a mental note to tell Debbie about his success as soon as possible.

Debbie had been in his thoughts quite a lot recently. Over the months since their meeting on holiday he had steadily grown fond of her. So often when you meet somebody on holiday and then see them afterwards in their own environment it is impossible to recapture the magic of the holiday, but he had not found that with Debbie. Each time he had seen her during the last few months, the sparkle of those days in Dorset had returned. In between their meetings it was the little reminders that popped into his thoughts from time to time: her infectious laugh, her smile… and her shyness, which swamped her strengths. Under his guidance, despite her reservations, she had taken to the digital camera with comparative ease, and she was doing remarkably well with the computer considering that she had no previous experience. He would be glad when the better weather came. Then perhaps they could spend more time together. That was what he enjoyed most: her company. He was thinking of all these things as he drank his tea and gazed out of the window. People were going off to work now. He watched several leave his block of flats. Thank goodness he was done with all that. His tea finished, he wandered back into the kitchen. He had idled long enough. It was time to start the day proper.

He was shaving when the telephone rang. Its shrill sound penetrated even the noise of his electric razor. Who could be ringing so early in the day? He wasn’t expecting any calls. It wouldn’t be Rob so early: he would ring from work later if necessary. Perhaps it was someone from the camera club offering congratulations, but it was an odd time to ring.
