Chapter 11

Vikram called the commissioner, Kabir Khanna, on his mobile. Kabir Khanna and Vikram went back a long time. They had worked together in a child trafficking case while Vikram was still in the police force. Later, when Vikram opened his investigative agency, Khanna had introduced Vikram to Inspector Lobo, with whom Vikram had successfully solved the murder of film star Ryan Gomez[1].

The time was 9 a.m., and Khanna was still at home. He had taken a conference call with his team for some routine issues from his home and was now having breakfast before leaving for the office. He was feeling relaxed after Amit’s arrest. The pressure of constant media attention had finally lifted. When his phone rang, he looked at the caller id and was surprised to see that it was Vikram. Though he had an important meeting with the Chief Minister after breakfast and was in a rush, he still took Vikram’s call as he was fond of Vikram and respected him for the cold efficiency with which he solved his cases.

“Hello, Vikram. Nice to hear from you. You’re calling after ages! Where are you?”

“In Kolkata, sir. I would like to meet you. Can you please give me some time?”

“Er… what’s this about?”

“The Kalki Sen murder case, sir.”

Khanna hadn’t been too happy with the way Das was investigating the case. He was glad to hear Vikram was getting involved in the case. He knew Vikram would cooperate with the police and would be a tremendous help in the investigation process. But he kept these thoughts to himself.

“Hmm… I’m pretty busy these days, but still, for you, I’ll make some time. But I can give you at most fifteen minutes. Will that suffice?”

“That will be ample.”

“Okay, call my PA and ask him to fix an appointment. I’ll tell him to accommodate you at the earliest. You know his number?”

“Yes, I have it. I’ll coordinate with him.”

The PA fixed a meeting at 11 a.m. the next day.

When Vikram entered his office the next day, Khanna stood to shake hands. With a smile, he said, “So Vikram, what brings you to Kolkata?”

“I’ve been recruited by Amit Ghosh’s mother to investigate the murder of Kalki Sen.”

Kabir Khanna didn’t respond immediately. He frowned as he stared at the various TV screens silently flashing the news from various parts of the city. Then, nodding his head as if he had come to some conclusion, he said, “I consider you to be one of us. That’s why I’ll say some things to you that are confidential in nature.”

“Yes, of course, sir. You know you can trust me.”

The commissioner nodded graciously, then said, “To be honest with you, Vikram, I feel that the investigation is currently not up to the mark. The man in charge, ACP Das, has made up his mind that Amit is the culprit and is now trying to fit the evidence accordingly.”

“What’s your personal opinion, sir?” Vikram asked.

“I …I don’t know, Vikram. And that’s the reason I am glad that you are taking up this case.
