Chapter Twenty-five

It was early in the morning when Detectives Kirkland and Bautista arrived at the crime scene. When they walked in the apartment they were met by Lieutenant Gene Sanchez from the narcotics division.

“There they are,” Sanchez said and walked away from the uniformed officers he was talking to. “Good morning, Detective Bautista. ¿Cómo está usted en esta hermosa mañana?”

“Estoy muy bien, Lieutenant. Gracias por preguntar,” Bautista replied.

“¿Cómo te esta tratando el tipo?” Sanchez asked and pointed at Kirk. “Le esta tratando.”

“He’s treating her fine,” Kirk said, and both Sanchez and Bautista looked at him. “Now can we get to work here?”

“What you got for us this morning?” Bautista asked.

“Four black males murdered. From the looks of it, they were on their knees when they were shot,” Sanchez informed them. “ME’s been here and gone. The lab guys saved the bodies for you.”

“What do you think, Bautista?” Kirk asked.

Bautista put on her gloves and crouched down next to one of the bodies. “Execution style.” His hands were tied behind his back. “They’ve all been shot point-blank in the back of the head.” Kirk looked over the other bodies and then signaled to the techs that it was all right to take the body.

Bautista nodded her head and began looking over the rest of the crime scene. “There are definitely signs of forced entry,” she said as she looked at the doorframe.

Kirk walked over and joined her. “Think they kicked it in?”

Bautista rolled her eyes. “Judging from the splintering of the frame around the lock, I’d say that’s a safe assumption.” She didn’t like being asked simple questions like that, but she was getting used to it. No matter how long she had been on the force, as far as Kirk was concerned, she was still a wet-behind-the-ears rookie. The fact that she came over from robbery-homicide meant nothing to him. Detective Bautista understood that she would have to prove herself to her new partner and she was anxious to do so.

It was like a dream come true for her to be working with him. The fact that she thought he was sexy was just the icing on the cake.

“What else, Detective?” Kirk asked as Sanchez looked on with a big smile on his face. He thought that Detective Marita Bautista was hot.

“Judging by the bullet holes in this wall, somebody shot at them. Shooter fired back.” Bautista knelt down and picked up a few shells. “Doesn’t seem like the firefight lasted very long.”

“Reason?” Kirk asked.

“Superior firepower would be my guess, Detective.”

“You got anything on those guys?” Kirk asked and pointed to where the bodies were found.

“No ID on any of them,” Sanchez said. “But you know how that goes, Kirk. Wipe away a set of these scumbags and a fresh set of scumbags take their place,” Sanchez said and looked at Bautista. “Dispense mi idioma.”

Bautista laughed a little. “Es bueno, Detective, I’ve heard much worse than that.”

Kirk shook his head. “Anybody canvas the building?” he asked.

“Uniforms.”

“And?”

“Nobody saw anything; nobody heard anything,” Sanchez said.
