everything right with Father and in making poor Mother understand, but would undertake to have all my books packed up and sent on to me as soon as I had a place for them. Then she asked: "Is there anything else I can do?"

I am afraid I spoke earnesdy, like a little boy: "I'll need more clothes than this"—holding up my little traveling bag. She seemed touched by my request and bent forward and kissed me on the cheek. I do think she saw me at that moment as a sort of miserable orphan child.

"You just send me a list, Phillip," she said. Then we went out and got into her car, and she drove me to the airport. On my flight to New York I found myself going over and over what I knew and remembered of both my sisters' unhappy experiences during the unhappy times of our removal from Nashville to Memphis. I suffered for them that morning as never before.
