There were no tears this time when I saw him, only ear-to-ear grins. The two weeks since I’d seen him dragged by. I spoke to him on the phone twice; he called me on my birthday and we spoke for so long the nurses had to ask him three times to end the call. I got two letters in the mail, sent one back, and delivered the second one by hand. He had another operation on his leg, and doctors thought that might be the last one. Now he just had more healing to do. He was so happy to see us. Kat came back with me, though she explained to the nursing staff that she had appointments downtown and it would only be me, Richard’s brother-in-law, who would visit the next day.

I spent the whole time by his bedside. I brought him books, more soda, a T-shirt or two, and some more cookies and candy. And I also gave him some brochures on San Francisco, listing all the things to do and all the places to see.

He wanted to know every little detail about our apartment and about my job. I mentioned that he’d put on a much-needed pound or two, and when I told him he looked much better, his reply was simple. “Because now I have something to look forward to.”
