Chapter Twenty-Four

There was a knock at the door.

‘Just a moment,’ Suzanne called as she pulled her dress over her head and put her arms through the cap sleeves. She opened the bedroom door and gave a gasp. Fern was standing there smiling from ear to ear, looking stunning in a sleek white gown that hugged her figure and draped to the floor. Her hair was dressed in a beautiful shiny dark chignon, decorated by a white artificial flower, and she was wearing silver high-heeled sandals, long white gloves, and carried a white fur stole over her arm. In her hand was a tiny sequined bag on a silver chain.

‘Aren’t you going to invite me in?’ she asked in her husky tones.

‘Oh – yes, of course.’ Suzanne stood aside while Fern wafted through the door and into the room, thankful her side was neat, even though Betty’s space looked as though it had been through a whirlwind. ‘You took me by surprise. How lovely you look.’

‘Thank you, sweetie.’ Fern cast her eyes round. ‘Oh, dear,’ she said, ‘I wouldn’t call this much of a room. It’s so small for one thing, and incredibly dreary … rather like the entire hotel,’ she added. ‘And by the looks of it you haven’t even got it to yourself.’

‘I don’t mind,’ Suzanne said quickly. ‘It’s nice having Betty’s company.’ She looked at Fern curiously. ‘Are you staying here as well?’

‘Yes, but I made them change my room. I’m on the top floor now so I have a view of the Rock. I insisted they gave it a thorough clean but the place is still a dump.’ She gave Suzanne a rueful smile. ‘Never mind all that. The cars will be here to fetch us in …’ she looked at her watch ‘… exactly twenty-two minutes. I just wanted to see you on your own to give you some Dutch courage. I felt you might need it. But I can talk while I help you into your evening gown.’

Suzanne wanted to curl up. She looked down at her dress. Surely it wasn’t that bad. She willed herself to raise her eyes to Fern who wore a slight frown.

‘I’m already wearing it.’ Suzanne tossed the words away with a short laugh as though it mattered nothing to her either way.

Fern’s eyes widened and she shook her head. ‘Suzy, we’re going to meet some top-notch people,’ she began. ‘Everyone will be dressed to the nines … including you, sweetie.’ She looked Suzanne up and down. ‘Back in five minutes … stay where you are,’ she added sternly.

True to her word, Fern was back within minutes, a pale-coloured creation, neither beige nor apricot, but somewhere in between, over her arm. ‘Try this.’

Suzanne stood a little embarrassed in her brassiere and French knickers in front of Fern. She only had one pair of stockings to her name, but as the weather was so hot, she couldn’t bear the thought of wearing them, in spite of the vision of Maman’s horrified expression of her daughter appearing in such a grand venue with bare legs.
