Chapter Eighteen

After landing at Kerikeri airport, Georgia let Matt take her home to pick up a few things before they drove to Opua. There they boarded the car ferry for Russell, where he lived.

“Did you know that Russell was originally called Kororareka?” he asked her as they leaned on the side of the ferry, looking down into the water.

“I didn’t, no.”

“It means sweet penguin.”

“Oh! Have you ever seen any?”

“Penguins? Yes, once, when I went out on a boat trip through the Hole in the Rock. We’ll have to go—most times you get to see dolphins, and occasionally penguins, seals, and orcas.”

“I’d love to do that.”

“It’s a date,” he said, and smiled.

Georgia bumped shoulders with him, and he put his arm around her. She snuggled up, excited and a little nervous about the prospect of spending almost two weeks with him. It had been a long time since she’d lived with anyone, and she’d grown used to her independence. To getting up and going to bed when she wanted, eating what she liked, or going out for a walk without having to please anyone else. Being in a relationship meant giving up a certain degree of freedom, and while the benefits usually outweighed the downsides, she knew it would take time to adjust.

Matt appeared to be sincere in his feelings for her, but it wouldn’t be until they settled into each other’s company that she would discover what he was really like. She didn’t care if he left socks on the floor or the toilet seat up—those kinds of things didn’t bother her. But while she enjoyed his company, she had yet to see if he was the type of man who was possessive in a relationship. He acted possessive in bed, and she liked that, but she wouldn’t like it if he demanded her attention all the time, or refused to let her do her own thing. And she didn’t know him well enough to understand whether it was still the chase that was keeping him interested, and if maybe his desire would wane once they were together all the time.

It didn’t show much sign of waning yet, she thought, as he stood behind her and wrapped her in his arms. In spite of being in public, he was nuzzling her ear and sucking on the lobe.

“Stop it.” She wriggled in his arms, but he just laughed and kissed her cheek. “Tell me about your house,” she said, trying to distract him.

He rested his chin on her shoulder, and they watched a couple of gannets swooping into the water for fish. “It’s very… me. I hope you like it.” He sounded nervous.

She looked over her shoulder at him in surprise. “Of course I’ll like it. Why wouldn’t I?”

“I’m not big on furniture.”

“Does it have a bed?”

“Yes, Georgia, it has a bed. That was one item I did insist on.”

“And somewhere to sit and maybe watch TV?”

“Yeah…”

“Then don’t worry about it. I love it already.”

He didn’t say anything, though, and she pondered on that as they made their way back to their car and got in.
