CHAPTER ELEVEN
Spring had finally made its way to the Cape and Charlotte couldnât be any happier with the change. The weather was warming up and the trees were starting to show a little life, but the best part about it was the difference in her writing. It was like the new growth of the season had seeped into her imagination as she sat down to write each day.
Over the previous two weeks, sheâd written nearly thirty thousand words, and that was an overwhelming number for her when she saw the total at the bottom of the screen. Inspiration had hit her in the most inopportune moments, but she never failed to find a way to stop and jot down her thoughts.
Sometimes, sheâd wake up in the middle of the night and her mind just would not let her go back to sleep without getting up and putting her thoughts down. Other nights, sheâd wake up from a dream that seemed entirely too real, and she would jump up and scribble things on a pad by her bed before it left her.
But Spring was not being kind to her todayâat least not to her writing. The weather was gorgeous. The windows of her office were open, she could hear the birds in the trees and bushes around her property. Children were playing and shouting somewhere down the street, but the words just would not come. After erasing four sentences for the fourth time, she closed her computer and sat back in her chair, defeated and frustrated.
A knock on her door surprised her, and she jolted straight up in the chair. It shouldnât have, there were only two people who had a key to her house, and she was one of them. But the lack of sleep and the overuse of her brain had made her forget every day, mundane things.
âHey, you,â she said to Briggs, who stood in the door with a bakery box and a cup of coffee. âYou sure are a sight for sore eyes⦠literally.â She forced out a laugh, but it held little amusement. Her eyes really did hurt.
âHey, yourself. Am I interrupting something?â
As he walked over to her desk, she took a moment to appreciate just how handsome he was. She smiled up at him, thankful for his visit. âYouâre not interrupting a thing. I canât seem to make the words flow this morning. Iâm frustrated a little, I guess.â She took the coffee from his hand and drank down a few swallows. âWhatâs in the bag?â
When he pulled out croissants with a cheesy grin on his face, she grabbed his cheeks with both hands and smacked a kiss on his lips. âYouâre the best man on the planet!â She tore into one of the flaky, buttery croissants that were still warm. âDid you get these from Gabe?â
He nodded. âYep. He was at the bakery trying out a few things before he opens, and I asked if I could let you be the official taste tester for these.
