Chapter 12

Maya

Sebastian ended up inviting me to lunch at his house. I tried my best to mask my surprise when I agreed. Then we opted to split up to finish our grocery shopping, and I met him at his car in the parking lot after.

Sebastian pulls the car into the driveway of a beautiful two-story house. As he turns off the car and lets the kids out, I’m frozen in my seat, staring up and taking in the scenery in awe. It looks like one of those houses that feature on the main page of realtor websites, with excellent lighting and the perfect mix of colors.

This isn’t just Sebastian’s house; it was Dana’s too. It’s the place where she was living with her family before she passed away, a house I would be familiar with if I’d reached out to her when I settled in Seattle, but also might never have existed if I did. I’m not sure how I should feel now that I’m here. Guilty? Remorseful? I’m having trouble even feeling happy that I’m finally being allowed to be involved with the family.

“You coming?” Sebastian asks me, jolting me out of my thoughts just in time to see the kids running to the front door.

“Yeah, give me a minute.”

Sebastian nods and turns to follow his daughters into the house. I slide out of the car, whose doors lock behind me, the car horn startling me. I walk to the door and hesitate for a second before I open it, wrestling mentally between whether I should knock or just enter. The door is slightly ajar, so I push it open.

The inside of the house is airy and bright. Next to the front door, in the foyer, there’s an abstract painting. The walls are painted white and blue—Dana’s favorite colors. I lift my head to keep my tears back. Above me, there’s a gorgeous stained glass chandelier fixture in the middle of the vaulted ceiling. The house feels so spacious and uncluttered. I’m sure Dana loved living in a place like this. I envy her. She got to live the American dream: a beautiful house, a beautiful family, and an amazing job.

I hear Sebastian and the kids’ voices farther down the hallway and follow them. At every step, I pause to look at the pictures hung along the wall. Most of them are of Luna and Ava, from toddlerhood to present. The rest are of Sebastian and Dana together in various scenes, looking into each other’s eyes or laughing and holding hands. One in particular stands out to me: they’re standing on sand with the ocean behind them, and Sebastian is behind Dana with a big smile on his face. He’s embracing her while Dana gazes at him lovingly. Seeing them like this sends a jab to my heart—or what’s left of it anyway. They look so happy; a huge part of me wishes that it was me who brought such a smile to Sebastian’s face.

“Found her!”

My attention is forced away from the picture, and I see that Luna has taken hold of my hand.
