For two more nights, the little boat tossed on the waves.

Jacob had taken to helping her with the stock any time he could slip away. It couldn’t be much better—the cows tolerated him and the horses adored him.

“How do the beams of the hull hold out when the barque smacks into the bottom of a trough?” Aleksandra shook her head.

“That’s why’n y’truly have t’ have’n the best boat builders,” the boy said smugly. “Now, this barque, she’um made ’n Liverpool, that’s’n in England, and she’s made with the finest timbers,” he said loudly, then added in an undertone, “Miss Aleks, I b’lieve we be gettin’ pulled along by a current now, the wind be slackenin’, but hear the li’l waves against the side?”

Aleksandra held her breath and listened. Sure enough, little wavelets slapped against the side. Not crashing, just slipping past the hull.

“Have y’got y’li’l bag packed?”

Aleks nodded in the faint light. She had to go. There was no other choice. Broadhurst seemed more unbalanced by the day.

“Here’n some oilcloth t’wrap yer kit in,” he whispered, “an’ put this in it too.” He dropped to his knees before her and handed her a stack of hardtack, a flask of water, some raisins and a good-sized chunk of salt pork to boot. “Cooks’n told me to giv’n this to ye. We’ll be takin’ care to feed y’man while y’re gone.” He dropped a kitbag with shoulder straps beside the pile on the ground. “There’n be ’n oilsk’n coat in t’ bott’m o’ the bag. It be likin’ to rain here.” He grinned. “More’n y’ve ever seen.”

Aleks smiled her thanks and gripped his hands, then let go. On impulse, she gave him a peck on the cheek and a tight hug.

He colored so pink she could see it in the near-darkness. He stood, then leaned down to Aleksandra once more.

“If’n y’send help, know ’at the men faithful’n to the old Cap’n Rach’ll be waitin’ to help free Rach’s friend and y’rs. Godspeed.” He touched his forelock and slid away.
