Chapter Eighteen

During my stay, Lars and I have the most fantastic time together. We cycle, swim on the beach and watch the sun go down on the horizon. Lars and I both love the nature that the island offers, and every day I discover how much more we have in common. We have chatted about climate change, politics, and all sorts of discussions that could typically create tension. However, not once do we have a cross word. Okay, it does irritate me when he calls me ‘Omelette lady’, but I think he means it as a term of endearment. I haven’t brought it up, though, as I will leave the cottage in a few days, which means that it is almost time to go home. How quickly one month goes when you’re having the time of your life.

We are having a picnic on the beach when I remind Lars that I leave in two days’ time.

‘You don’t have to leave,’ says Lars. He picks at the corner of our blue, checked woven picnic blanket and waits for my response.

‘Suzy is expecting me back at work. I need to get back to Gareth and relieve Angus of his goldfish-sitting duty,’ I explain.

‘What about us?’ says Lars.

Until now, I wasn’t sure what was happening between us. We are not officially in a relationship; nothing has happened between us. No hanky-panky, if you know what I mean. Finally, however, it looks as though it is time for ‘the talk’.

‘Well, there is no us, is there?’ I start. ‘I’ve loved your company, and we’ve had an amazing time, but that’s where it ends. We’re from two different worlds. You have your job. I have mine in Wales.’

‘You could find something here. I could help. You have your blog. Maybe it could make money? Or, I could employ you at the bakery. Look,’ says Lars, taking a bite out of the Welsh cakes I made this morning for our picnic. ‘These are delicious. I’m sure I could sell them… I know; how about I pay you to make Welsh cakes?’

‘I love your enthusiasm, but they need me at the library. I need to get back, as much as I don’t want to leave you or Fanø.’ I say.

‘Well, why don’t you call Suzy? Ask her if you can have some extra time off. Even a week or two? It would be nice to spend some more time with you. We can get to know each other even better.’ Lars grabs hold of my hand, and I feel as though my whole body is going to explode. Before Lars, the last person who held my hand was the undertaker at Anthony’s funeral, and I didn’t want to let go then, either.

‘So, what do you think? Can I convince you to at least stay another week?’ asks Lars.

He leans over and kisses me on the lips, still holding my hand. His kiss is gentle and delicate. He tastes of Welsh cake.

‘Well, that is very tempting, now you put it that way,’ I say awkwardly.
