Christ in a cab was all Jay could think. Was he seriously butt-hurt over Maggie taking Reid, a badass to the bone, to a stakeout?

Apparently, yes.

Might as well be a man and admit it. Between this and last night’s debacle, he might be an even bigger asshole than he suspected. Talking Maggie into banging him in a car wasn’t exactly his shining moment, but this thing with Reid? It…hurt.

He respected Maggie’s dedication to her job. Despite their differences, at their core, he and Maggie were the same animal. They approached their responsibilities with the same ferocity. Both competitive and hungry for positive results, no matter the task.

Based on the dark circles rimming her eyes, this particular task might be annoying her enough to keep her awake at night. The fact that she was standing while eating only proved the point. If she sat down? Toast.

Right to sleep.

He knew this about her. Loved it even. How many times had he come home from a night game and found her passed out sitting up on the couch with her computer in her lap? One night, she’d drooped sideways, her hand still clutching the laptop. At which point, he eased the computer away and carried her to their bed. Under protest.

His Maggie.

Time to take the bullet. He held up his hands. “Time out. I’m not handling this well.”

“Ha! Ya think?”

Patience, patience, patience. His acting like a toddler had started this. The fallout wouldn’t be pleasant. “Sarcasm? I’m trying here and you’re hitting me with an attitude.”

She pressed her lips together, tipped her head back to stare at the ceiling, then blew out a long breath. Definitely tired. This was her routine when her temper needed controlling.

He’d give her a minute to organize her thoughts and maybe—hopefully—give him a pass.

Finally, she gave up on the ceiling and met his eye. “Now I’m the one not handling it well. I’m sorry for being a smart-ass.”

He nodded. “We’re both tired.”

“We are. And you have a game tomorrow. A big one. There are a million reasons I can come up with for you not coming with me today, but after you offered to help last night—even with the cluster it turned into—I should have at least asked you.”

She stepped closer, wrapped her hands around his forearms and squeezed. “Babe, I’ll say this one more time and then I want it to be done. Last night wasn’t your fault. That’s on me for not taking the situation seriously enough. He’s only a trespasser, right? We weren’t even on the clock. Total volunteer situation. That’s what I was thinking when I climbed onto your lap. Shame on me for that. But now we have a solid lead and I need to get serious and catch this guy. For no other reason than he’s being a pain in the rear and wasting municipal resources.”

She inched closer and something in his chest kicked. Every time she got close, he experienced that crazy warm feeling he hoped never went away.
