Chapter Nine

Nate froze in the heat of passion and looked toward the door of the bedroom. That voice sounded familiar. It was Landon's brother.

“Fuck,” Landon said.

Nate's hand rested against Landon's chest, and he could feel his heart race. Nate felt vulnerable.

“Wait here,” Landon said in a harsh whisper, reaching in his closet for a pair of jeans, which he hastily put on. His others had been left in the other room, such was their immediate need to enjoy each other. Nate pushed himself up onto his elbows. He was going to ask Landon if he needed any help, but before he could utter even one word Landon placed a finger on his lips to silence him. Then he kissed him. He pressed his forehead against Nate's, and then left the room.

Nate had a foreboding feeling that it would be the last time he would see Landon.

He wanted to help Landon, but it was a family matter and there was nothing he could do anyway. It was better that he stay out of it, especially as there would be no way to convince Landon's brother that he didn't know anything about Landon when he was here at his cabin. Nate would never forget the vow Landon's brother had made, the promise that he would kill Nate.

Nate hurriedly grabbed his clothes and got dressed. The arousal had dissipated, much to Nate's dismay, although he was far too scared and anxious to think about that now.

“What are you doing here?” he heard Landon say.

“It's taken me long enough to find you. It wasn't hard. I had a feeling that kid was lying to me. All I had to do was follow his trail. You should be more careful. I thought you'd know better by now. I see that you're still up to your old tricks. When are you going to stop screwing around? You think a boy like him is going to be your future? He'll just end up like all the others, hurt and brokenhearted.”

“They only end up that way because you drive me away. Because you can't let me live in peace.”

“Of course I can't. Your place is at home. Do you really think I want to spend my life chasing after you? We're both caught in this trap Landon, I don't know why you have to make things so difficult.”

“You enjoy torturing me. You always have. You've always been jealous.”

“I don't envy you. I used to, once upon a time, but now I just pity you. I pity what you've become. Look at you, so weak and inferior. You want to be one of them. You hide in this world, pretending that you're something you're not.”

“This is who I am, Victor. It's who I've always been, who I've always wanted to be.”

“Then you shame us all.”

“Oh, are you really going to give me this lecture again? I thought after all this time you'd have some new material.”

“You should heed my words. I've spoken them to you often enough.”

“And don't I know it.
