Get Over Yourself

“These stitches aren’t completely straight,” Poppy said to Cory. Cory was one of the full-time seamstresses employed at the plant. She had four that did most of the scarves, purses and bags. She had three other part-time staff that made belts and hair accessories and filled in with the scarves, purses and bags as they got busy.

“The machine keeps catching,” Cory said. “I’ve redone that three times and it’s catching in the same spot.”

Poppy picked up another scarf, just like the one in her hand. They did made-to-order most times, but if something was popular enough they had it made in advance to ship faster. This was a wholesale order that Cory was working on.

“It didn’t catch on this one,” she said. “What about the one you’re working on?”

“No,” Cory said.

“So you just figured no one would notice that this wasn’t straight all the way through?”

“I think it’s the fabric,” Cory said. “As I said, it’s catching in the same spot. I didn’t want to waste the fabric.”

“I’d rather you waste it and cut more. As you know, nothing is ever wasted. You put it in the scrap bin and someone else will use it for an accessory or a smaller product.”

“You’re right,” Cory said. “I’ll make another one.”

“Thank you,” she said, nodding, and walked away with the scarf in her hand.

“Someone didn’t get lucky last night.”

She turned to see Rose standing close by. “What?”

“You. I know you’re fussy about every little stitch, but…”

“You’re the same way about your products. This is our reputation on the line.”

“It is,” Rose said, reaching for the scarf and looking. “Where is the stitch off? I can’t find it.”

She pulled it back and found it and showed it to Rose. “Right there. It kinks to the right.”

Rose started to laugh. “Yeah. No one in their right mind would find that and you know it.”

“I did,” she argued.

“And you’re not in your right mind. It’s more because you know what you’re looking for. But the average customer doesn’t. Would the stitch come out because it’s angled slightly to the right?”

“No,” she said.

“Then get over yourself,” Rose said. “I thought you went to the casino last night with Reese. I expected you to be floating in here on an orgasm cloud and instead you’re biting people’s heads off over a rogue stitch.”

“I don’t believe I bit anyone’s head off,” she said.

“You were firmer than usual. Normally you’re polite and you weren’t. So what gives?”

She’d said thank you to Cory but looking back it was on the short side.

She grabbed Rose’s arm and tugged her off the floor and into a storage space where no one was around. “Reese and I got into a fight last night.”

“About what?”

She told Rose what happened and didn’t appreciate her sister’s laughter. “It’s not funny. Why do you think it is?”

“Seriously, Poppy. You of all people have no right to get pissed off that he’s had sex with other women.”

“Are you calling me a slut?” She wanted to be mad, but instead her eyes filled with tears.
