Chapter Thirteen

Waverly woke from a fitful sleep, realizing three things. First, the throbbing pain in her dreams was real and coming from her ankle. There was the scent of something wonderful wafting into her bedroom. And thirdly, an extremely handsome doctor was sitting on the side of her bed, staring down at her while wiping hair from her cheek. She wasn’t sure if she should be mortified, figuring she resembled roadkill, focus on the aching parts of her body, or just forget it all and lay there, looking up at him.

“Hi,” he said in that smooth velvety voice. “How are you feeling now that you’ve had some rest?”

She blinked and reminded herself to breathe in and out.

“Waverly?” His thumb was slowly moving back and forth along the apple of her cheek.

“Hmm?”

“You doing okay?”

“Uh...”—not sure I am—“yeah. I guess so. But why are you still here, and what is that delectable smell?”

His dimpled smile made her tummy flutter. “I’m here because you need someone to look after you for a little bit. And what you are smelling is dinner.”

It took her a second to process that, wondering which to address first, then blurted, “You made dinner?”

The slow dance his thumb had been making on her skin stopped, and he straightened, no longer leaning over her, then shrugged. “Yes and no.”

“Huh?”

Nox chuckled, and not for the first time, she basked in the sound. “I made a salad. But the rest I ordered and had delivered.”

“What’s the rest?”

“Pasta Primavera from Gena’s.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“I love her food.”

“I know.”

Her eyes widened at that. “How could you?”

“I saw the takeout menus in the drawer by the refrigerator and picked the one that appeared to have the most crinkles in it.”

“So, how did you know her Pasta Primavera is one of my favorite dishes?”

“When I called in, I asked what she would recommend for you.”

“Okay. Now I can add detective to your list of talents.”

He grinned.

She grunted after she sat up.

“Come on. I’m providing my full doctor services to you this evening, Ms. Chastain.” The man stood and plucked her up.

“Oh...” Placing her arms around his neck, she relaxed into his chest. “I wasn’t expecting you to carry me, but thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

He took her down the hall and into the living room, where soft music was playing, candlelight was flickering, and her chunky coffee table had been placed at a different angle. It was transformed not only with candles, plates, and food but also with a vase of freshly cut roses sitting there. “Nox...this is...this is lovely.”
