The party had been planned for the second May bank holiday giving as many people as possible the chance to attend. The invitations had gone out and pretty much everyone had accepted, Dickie had been right to think of it in terms of a small fete, as at least a hundred people were going to show up at one point or another. The party was due to begin at two to allow the London contingent time to travel. Mama Vy was concerned about the food and had offered to cater, Dickie was also concerned but Ari said the more the merrier and now Mr Kumar also wanted to cook. In the end, Ari told Dickie to hire some catering tents and they would provide the food and talent. She had had a long row on the phone with Mama Vy about accepting money for the food and she only relented when Ari told her how many bedrooms her new house had. At that point, Vy said she would be prepared to go halves. Ari decided that she would talk to Mama Vy’s daughters. She had gone to school with them and knew that they would be less proud. Especially when they saw the size of her house. She didn’t doubt she was going to receive a lot of good-natured ribbing when everyone turned up. When she had received details of her inheritance, she had spoken privately to one or two ladies on the street. Over the years, when she had been uncertain of her next step she would chat to these older ladies, interested in their viewpoints and opinions. They had been delighted for her. Theirs was not a street that wasted time on class distinctions, they firmly believed that hard work and kind hearts were always rewarded. To them this was just as it should be and they felt that an injustice to the mother had been corrected for the daughters.

Now Ari was looking forward to spending time with them, and seeing if they approved of what she had achieved so far.
