Kara went to freshen up and check on the vendor updates before she and the family walked into the village for dinner and the Christmas tree celebration.

A few days from now, she’d be swamped with putting together everything for the party. She sank down on the bed, remembering that moment in Richard’s arms earlier. She’d felt secure and…well, she liked being in his arms. Liked having someone comfort her instead of her doing all the comforting.

Unfortunately, his mother had noticed, too, but Vanessa Westfield didn’t strike her as the type to make a fuss. No, she’d be more the type to push her son toward a woman she approved of, not that Kara needed her approval.

Richard had waved to his mother, and she’d waved back. Then he’d laughed the whole thing off. Which meant he hadn’t taken the hug seriously.

Kara ran a hand over her hair. “We’re adults and it was an innocent hug. Why do I do these things to myself?” she said out loud. Then she put her hand over her mouth. “And why do I talk to myself all the time?”

She knew why. Her childhood had been chaotic. But her mother had managed to reel in the four kids and keep things rolling. School, church, soccer or baseball practice, chores—you name it, Lois Benton had it under control. Kara had started talking to herself in the days after the funeral when she had no one else to talk to. If she said things out loud, it felt as if her mom could hear her. Even now, she could imagine her mom saying, “He’s a nice man, isn’t he? And so handsome. But honey, he’s all locked in on his wife and how much he misses her. You might consider that.”

Old habits were hard to break. Well, here Kara needed to talk things out to remind herself that she had one goal: plan a party. One goal that required hours of arranging and organizing. She refused to let one hug get her all flustered.

Richard was the client, and this wasn’t high school after all. Now that his parents were here, she was off the hook. And soon, she could get to Arizona to see her father and meet Beatrice.

A knock at the door brought her out of her chair.

“Coming.”

She expected Richard to be standing there. But it wasn’t him.

“Mrs. Westfield—I mean, Vanessa—please come in,” she said, keeping her tone cordial.

Vanessa walked in like a queen coming to the dungeon, her gaze sweeping over the rectangular apartment. “I see you’re settled in nicely.”

Kara straightened her spine. “Yes, I travel light, and I have a desk and chair here where I do most of my work.”

Vanessa stood with her hands against her stomach, her fingers laced together in what looked like a defiant mother stance. “How did you convince Richard to give you both jobs, dear?”

“I didn’t—” Kara stopped. “He had to convince me, but he was in a bind. No available nannies until after Christmas and no one to watch his children.
