CHAPTER 45

Mid-September 2015

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Rusty felt a hand massaging him. As he struggled to open his eyes, he heard a feminine voice say, “Come on cowboy. One more time. You can do it.”

Predawn light crept around the curtains and for a few seconds Rusty could not remember where he was. His physical need for a woman had diminished sometime in the night and his psychological need had flown with the coming daylight. He wished he’d left after the second go round or maybe the fifth—before now anyway.

The woman’s hand was warm and encouraging. “Ah, yes,” she said. “That’s better. I knew you could do it. I just love cowboys. All that testosterone.”

Rusty felt her slide on top of him. He could not think of her name. She sat up and threw the covers back. Leaning forward, she placed a hand on each of his shoulders. “Come on, cowboy, do your thing.”

Rusty could see only the outline of her face in the dim light. Her hair hung half-way down her breasts. He recalled that it was flaming red. He’d never been particularly attracted to red heads, but this one had been indescribably cute when he seen her in the bar. Of course, he’d had a couple of beers by then.

They’d had a very active night. But Rusty hadn’t found whatever he’d been seeking and now, he felt depressed. This teasing stranger meant nothing to him.

The final round lasted too long and when it was over, Rusty rolled away and pulled the covers over himself. “What are you doing, cowboy?” the woman said. “You can’t go to sleep. The night shift is getting out and my husband will be here in a few minutes.”

“Your what?”

“My husband. Now get your clothes on and get out of here.”

“Are you going to give me a ride to the fairgrounds?”

“We haven’t got time for that. Walk down a couple of blocks and call an Uber.”

Rusty recognized the urgency of the situation and dressed quickly. For a heart racing few seconds he couldn’t find his hat. It turned up on the floor under a blanket that had slid off the foot of the bed. He happily clapped it on his head and headed out. The apartment was on the second floor and the red head directed him to the back stairs. He thought he heard a car pulling into the parking lot but wasn’t sure if it was reality or his imagination. With no Uber app on his phone, he had to use the map app to find his way to the fairgrounds.

As he hoofed it, he thought about the woman he’d spent the night with. He remembered how her hair had been piled on top of her head and the innocent little curls that fell beside her ears. An amazing disguise, he thought, now. She’d been sitting with several other young women, and she smiled when she caught him looking. A few minutes later she strolled past him on the way to the ladies’ room. On
