FOR THE MOST PART STORIES like the ones told to me by Thomas and Jerome ended on a happy note. My primary job was to listen to their stories and encourage them to get on the ghost train. Occasionally I would see them milling about my town watching me like a wild animal trying to determine if the food I held in my hand was safe or if it was a trap. I learned to be careful about how I approached them. I needed to be cautious of their fear, but I also needed to interact with them in a way that wouldnât scare my wife. Her concerns over my sanity bothered me deeply and I felt a deep sadness over the distance it created in our relationship that I wanted to fix.
I was growing more powerful in the world of infinite dreams. The psionic energy I unleashed to defend Victor and myself against The Daughters of Arachne had become easier and easier to manifest in my dreams. It also began to grow stronger outside of them. I was seeing and attracting more lost souls every day and was developing an acute empathic awareness of the emotions of the living as well. I wasnât sure if I should be concerned or not. I had put up magical wards around my home, but if I could sense so much of the dream world of the ethereal and psychic, then I worried that I could also be attracting unwanted attention from powers greater than my own. Hekate had me create wards around my house for a reason but had never actually instructed me on how to do it properly. I was making stuff up as I went along. It was like learning on the job, only instead of messing up a customer order, I could be messing up the cosmic order.
