CHAPTER 11

Miranda couldn’t stop thinking about the slaughtered cattle, mainly because she had a feeling there was something she was missing. It was nagging at the back of her mind, like a gnat that wouldn’t leave her alone. It buzzed around her thoughts, insisting to be let in.

She was sitting in her office with Hank napping nearby and had just finished doing some research on Ulysses. She’d found his file and from what she’d seen, he didn’t have much of a record, at least nothing terrible.

Maybe it would be good for Joanne to have a man in her life. Just because he didn’t have much of a record didn’t mean he was necessarily good, but it did mean he hadn’t been caught doing anything bad. The Agency didn’t track things like employment. They mainly wanted to know where the paranormals currently were and that was only if they had a real record. Otherwise, it was more like a census.

Unable to distract herself any longer, Miranda started thinking about the cows and what the Blacks had caught on their security camera footage. It was obviously a werewolf, but who? It was a little strange for her to admit, but she was glad she’d been made aware of the cattle case. She knew it wasn’t Jesse or one of the wolves she was more familiar with.

Otherwise, she’d be focusing on the fact that her boyfriend was MIA and probably hiding things from her. Who was that woman? Why were he and Jeff going to see her at the motel? Jesse had promised her before that he’d always be as open as possible with her, so why hadn’t he told her about the woman?

There were too many questions and not enough answers. The only thing thinking about it did was give her a huge headache and more questions than answers. She didn’t see how worrying about something she couldn’t figure out would do her any good.

“Okay,” she said aloud to herself. “Time to focus on the cattle.” She pulled out the notepad she’d been writing her thoughts down on and tapped her pen on the paper. There had to be some sort of a link between the wolf at the Blacks’ farm and the cattle at the ranch. Some sort of common denominator that she was missing.

Could it be that whoever it was just happened to be close by? “Hmm, I wonder,” she said as she had an idea. She had a feeling the shifter that
