Chapter 7
When Nick came downstairs the following morning, he was greeted to a horrifying sight.
Well, “horrifying” might be a bit strong, but it was a sight he didn’t really need to see.
His mother was sitting on the counter, her legs wrapped around his father’s waist, and they were kissing. A pot of oatmeal was cooking on the stove.
This happened nearly every time he went back to Mosquito Bay. He and Greg would usually stay over for a night or two, and his parents would forget that they no longer had the house to themselves.
“Oh, Smoochie-boo-kins,” his mother murmured.
At least, that’s what it sounded like, but Nick could have heard incorrectly.
“Ahem,” he said. “You’re not alone in the house this morning.”
Dad stepped back. “Oh, hi, Nick.”
“Don’t look so scandalized,” Mom said. “Old people kiss, too.”
“I’m very much aware of that.”
An image of him and Lily in their sixties, kissing in the kitchen, popped into his mind.
Nick shook his head. He was getting way ahead of himself. He’d only just decided he wanted something more than a one-night stand, and for him, that was a pretty big deal.
Besides, he’d always been certain he didn’t want to be like his parents.
But for a moment there...
“You deserve it,” Dad said, grinning, “after your grandmother caught you making out with Lily last night.”
“She shrieked as though someone had been stabbed,” Mom said. “Not that there’s been a stabbing in Mosquito Bay in, oh, forty-two years.”
“I thought it was thirty-seven years.”
“No, I think—”
“Okay, okay.” Nick held up his hands. “Enough!”
“Will you have breakfast with us before you leave?” Mom asked.
“Actually, I’m going to stick around a little longer than usual. I won’t leave until this afternoon, and then I’m going to Lily’s family’s Thanksgiving dinner.”
Mom and Dad looked at each other.
“Oooh,” they said, speaking in unison, as though they’d been together for over forty years. Which they had.
“You and Lily, eh?” Dad slapped him on the back. “And you’re meeting her family? This is going fast.”
“She’s gone through the hardship of meeting my family. Seems only fair.”
“Hardship?” Mom clasped her hands to her chest, as though she’d heard terrible news. “Hardship? We’re nice people.”
“Well, sure,” Nick said, “but these situations are always awkward. Especially since she came here as Greg’s blind date. Anyway, I’m sticking around until this afternoon, and I said I’d bake something for dessert. Maybe those butter tarts you used to make? Or date squares. Actually, you know what? I have lots of time. I’ll make both.”
Dad turned to Mom. “He really likes her.”
Mom just laughed. “You? Baking? You’ve never baked before, have you?”
“No,” Nick said, “but it can’t be too hard, once you have the recipe.”
“Can you even cook? Do you use the kitchen in that fancy condo of yours? Or are you storing your suits in the oven?”
“Thanks, Mom. Now, where are those recipes, and when does the grocery store open?”
* * *
Nick was starting to get the hang of this baking business. He was on his second batch of butter tarts, having burnt the first batch, but this batch was going to work out perfectly, he knew it.
