When she returned to the farm, George was there with his wagon, and he and Ethan were chatting. Claire slipped excitedly off her horse and ran over to them.

“Is the chair finished?” she asked while peeking into the back of the wagon. “Oh. It has no wheels.”

George said, “I wanted you both to see what I’ve done so far. Tomorrow I’m taking it to have the wheels made.”

Claire saw the chair had a cushion on the back for Harriet to rest her head, and it also had a platform for her feet and wooden handles on the back so the chair could be pushed.

“It’s beautiful,” Claire said. “Harriet will be thrilled.”

George patted the chair’s seat. “And it’s good and sturdy. I reinforced it underneath to be sure she’s safe.”

Ethan looked on with them. “How much should I give you for the blacksmith?”

“Oh,” George replied, “the blacksmith can’t do the job, but there is a wheelwright who works at the lumberyard. He’s going to make the wheels. He does them for carriages and buggies, too. His name is John Hardy, and he said he’d made wheelchairs before when he was in St. Louis. He said it would cost three dollars. I hope that won’t be a problem.”

Ethan frowned but said, “We’ll find the money.”

After George had left, Claire asked Ethan, “Can you afford the three dollars?”

Ethan frowned again and looked embarrassed. “I’ll find it somewhere. You see, this is a bad time of year. I put all my money into seeds, fertilizer, animal feed, and money to pay the farmhands. I also paid for the cost of a mail-order bride. Come fall, we’ll have our profits, but June and July are hard months to find extra cash. I’ll come up with it somehow.”

“I’d help if I could,” Claire said. “Does Harriet have any money?”

“Yes. She isn’t rich, but I think I can borrow from her. I also bought the supplies for our journey yesterday, so we’re slightly pinched.”

“I’m sorry I started this, and I’ve cost you so much money.”

“No, Claire, it’s fine. Harriet’s fond of you; I would never have thought of the wheelchair. I don’t blame you at all.”

As he walked away, Claire felt warmth flow through her chest. Ethan was a good man. What made him so good when his mother could be a dragon? Was it going to church and his belief in God that made him so kind?
