Alexi smiled at Jack.
âWithout wishing to inflate your ego, Vickeryâs got it right. You are sometimes scarily good at what you do.â
Jack squeezed her arm. âWeâre a good team. Anyway,â he added, glancing at his watch. âLetâs see if Mr Farrington is at home and more to the point, if heâll agree to talk to us.â
âWhat if he puts the phone down on you?â
âThen weâll draw our own conclusions. But Iâm guessing that heâll know Crystabelâs been arrested and will be anxious to find out what they have on her. Itâs not as if he can ask Gloria.â
âThatâs silly. Surely theyâll put aside their animosity for their daughterâs sake.â
Jack chuckled. âYou heard Gloria earlier. Did she sound like a woman with a forgiving nature?â
âPerhaps not but thereâs no doubting her investment in Crystabel, both emotionally and professionally. If Crystabel goes down, so too do Gloriaâs ambitions. She knows that Farrington can buy Crystabel the very best defence team, which might be the mother and daughterâs only chance of survival.â Alexi nodded emphatically. âMy moneyâs on Gloria putting pressure on Farrington to step up to the plate.â
âYeah, I guess I can see that happening, so letâs see if we can gauge how willing Farrington will be to deliver.â
Jack dialled the number that Vickery had given him and put the call on speaker.
âYes.â A deep, impatient voice answered. âWho is this?â
âMr Farrington, my name is Jack Maddox, Iâm a private investigator.â
A long pause. âI know who you are. I read the papers. How did you get my number? Is this about my daughter?â
âIt is. My associate, Alexi Ellis, and I would like to come over and speak with you about the situation, if itâs convenient.â
âHowâs Crystabel?â Genuine-sounding anxiety had entered his voice. âI heard sheâs been taken into custody. Iâll arrange a lawyer for her.â
âSheâs being released on police bail. She already has legal representation but, of course, if you want to instruct someone else, thatâs your prerogative.â
âCan I speak with her?â
âWhen she gets back to Hopgood House, sheâll be available on her mobile, but that probably wonât be for another couple of hours. In the meantime, can we come over and discuss the situation?â
âCertainly.â There was no hesitation. âI want to know whatâs going on; the police wonât tell me anything and I canât phone Gloria. Iâll text you the address.â
âWeâll be there within the hour,â Jack replied, cutting the connection.
Alexi raised a brow at Jack. âHe does sound like he cares.â
âHe does, but weâll know for sure once we see him face to face. Ready?â
Cosmo responded before Alexi could. He trotted to the door, then looked round at Jack, twitching his tail as though defying him to leave him behind.
âOkay, big guy,â Jack said, bending to tug gently at one of his ears. âYou can be security.â
Alexi laughed. âHeâll want to be on the payroll soon.â
Jack unlocked his car and opened the passenger door for Alexi. She slid onto the seat and winced when Cosmo landed on her lap with a soft thud.
