Nineteen

Paisley clutched Crockett’s arm. All hell had broken loose. People ran this way and that, yelling fit to wake the dead. A second later, a group of cowboys galloped toward headquarters to get their orders.

Fear raced through her, chilling her bones as they hurried toward her house. “This is madness. But Farrel thrives on that.”

“Agreed, but we don’t know this is him.” Crockett helped her over a hole in the ground.

“I do know,” she insisted.

Hilda and Tye came out onto the porch, the boy clinging to her dress. Paisley raced to them. “Are you all right?”

“Shaken up is all.” Hilda put a hand to her forehead. “Do you think Farrel did this?”

“I hate myself for thinking this, but yes. My brother is very capable of sowing chaos and fear.”

Crockett gave her a hurried hug. “I need to see what’s happened. We’ll talk later.” Houston careened toward them in a wagon, and it seemed unusual not to see him on a horse. Crockett jumped in with his father as the wagon slowed a bit and they sped off.

Paisley’s heart plummeted to the pit of her stomach as she watched them hurtle toward danger. She wanted to call them back and keep them safe, but she knew nothing she said would make any difference. They didn’t know he was the devil incarnate.

The porch shook beneath their feet as she caught a flash far in the distance. The explosion reverberated through the ground. God help them! Was he going to keep this up until he blew up the entire county?

“Come, let’s get inside.” She put an arm across Tye’s shoulders and opened the door.

Tye looked up at her. “Do you think Casanova is okay?”

“Yes, honey. I think he’s fine. Why, I’ll bet he’s sleeping and hasn’t felt a thing.”

Her face pinched, Hilda came in behind them and shut the door, pasting on a smile. “I went to the mercantile today and bought some popcorn. Would anyone want some?”

“Yea! I do, Mama!” Tye jumped up and down. “Popcorn’s good.”

“I agree.” Paisley considered the kitchen area the safest place to be at the moment. “And what if your mama and I read from that book you like?”

“Oh boy! I like Arabian Nights. Aladdin uses magic in it.”

Remembering the fantasy werewolf Tye pulled from the air when he was so distraught, Paisley lovingly touched his head. “I often thought I’d like to ride a magic carpet and go anywhere in the world I wanted. Wouldn’t that be fun?”

“And you could get away from bad people real easy.”

Although Farrel’s name didn’t come up a lot around Tye, the boy glanced up with worry lining his face. He was very smart, and it wasn’t any stretch to imagine he was probably thinking about his father and that he was responsible for the explosions. Tye knew what Farrel was capable of.

“Furthermore,” Paisley continued
