Chapter 6

Lacey woke up late the next morning. Light spilled into the room from the window. As she stretched, a sense of the world being righted on its axis filled her. Or maybe it was the gorgeous view that added to her contentment. It really was a treat to wake up to such beauty without having to get out of bed. Of course, the views of the marshes in the Lowcountry were spectacular, especially at sunset.

Unfortunately, Lacey’s bedroom window at home faced the front gravel driveway of the Duval mansion. Peering out at tiny rocks wasn’t nearly as nice.

A quick glance at the clock had her jumping out of bed. She’d couldn’t remember a time in recent history she’d slept so late.

Lacey quickly showered and brushed her teeth. As she came out of the bathroom, there was a knock on the bedroom door. Doing up the last few buttons on her blouse, she rushed to see if maybe Cade was paying her a good-morning visit.

“Buenos dias, señorita.” A rotund Hispanic woman about five feet tall entered, carrying a tray. “I brought you some breakfast. I hope you like coffee. I make a big pot. Señor Cade, he say he not sure if you drink it or not, so I make tea too. Just in case.” She nodded and gave her an expectant smile. “Sí?”

Lacey returned her smile. “You must be Camila. Cade told me all about you.”

“Sí. And you are Señorita Lacey.” After setting the tray down on the table in front of the magnificent view, Camila pulled out one of the two chairs around it and patted the seat. “Come. You eat breakfast, okay?”

Figuring it was better to obey than argue, Lacey sat. She poured herself a cup of coffee, added a bit of cream, then propped her feet on the other chair and peered out at the beautiful morning.

A couple of squirrels running up a tree caught her attention, as did a few birds eating from a feeder in the yard. She had to admit it was nice to be served like this and to enjoy a filling breakfast of eggs and toast while taking in the idyllic scenery.

As Lacey ate, Camila busied herself in the bathroom, then returned to the bedroom and began picking up the few items Lacey had left on the floor the previous night.

When Lacey realized Camila was about to make her bed, she said, “Please, you don’t have to do that.”

Camila, who’d begun fluffing the pillows, stopped in mid-fluff. “Surely you are not telling me you prefer to do this yourself? Otherwise, I will not earn the generous salary Señor Cade pays me.”

“Of course not. I wouldn’t think of depriving you of your livelihood.” Lacey bit back a smile, not wanting the feisty woman to know she found her attitude amusing and most refreshing. It was obvious the idea of not earning her keep was the worst thing possible.

Three-fourths of the waitresses and waiters Lacey had worked with over the past five years had a poor work ethic.
