When I came home from my business trip, I went straight to Chas’s room. I needed to absorb the essence of my brother again, to see if any of his scent was left. There never was.

It had been six days since I’d seen Ozzy. I couldn’t help but wonder how he was doing. If he missed me. Although that train of thought was one I kept trying to stop.

Yet, the whole time I’d been gone at meetings, traveling, alone in hotel rooms, even watching Club 99’s cameras at night as I always did to make sure things were going smoothly there—and sometimes to get off—I thought of Ozzy. He wouldn’t leave my thoughts.

In Chas’s bed, I lay back to absorb the memories. Much to my guilt, they had been fading for the past couple months.

I heard a soft sound, just as I had a week ago, coming from the old playroom.

Again, I got up and opened the adjoining door. The room was all ghosts and shadows. Silent.

Just as I was about to turn away, I realized something was different. The curtains on the window near the changing table and cribs were drawn aside. They had always been closed. The sun had already set, but the sky showed dark orange beyond the groves of fir trees, giving everything in the room a soft glow beyond the light bleeding in from behind me.

I moved into the room toward the window. I leaned my hands on the sill, expecting to encounter dust. But the area was clean as if housekeeping had recently been there. Housekeeping, however, did not come into this room or Chas’s by my direct orders. Once or twice a year, I asked for their service, but not recently.

I was going to have to speak to Whitby.

I pulled the curtains closed, as I preferred, then turned, glancing about the dim space. I was about to turn on the overhead to give it a more thorough inspection when my phone chirped. Quinn had texted me to ask if I wanted dinner brought up.

I texted back, “Yes.” Then I asked for him to delay it for about an hour.

I left the playroom and walked across Chas’s room to the hall door. I had wanted more time alone here, but I was also hungry. Plus, it was time to check up on Ozzy.

When I walked into the apartment, I was surprised to see stacks of unopened boxes by the couch. Ozzy was nowhere in sight.

I moved down the hall to his room. The door was ajar. Ozzy stood in the center of his room still wearing the robe I’d last seen him in five days ago. He was staring at his bed.

“Ozzy.” I spoke softly so I didn’t startle him.

He turned, eyes wide. “You’re back.”

I nodded.

“You were gone a long time.” It was almost an accusation.

I was a terrible host. I’d already told him I would not be around much. But it hurt me inside to see him looking so lost. I’d failed him terribly.
