âHey Hol, I hear youâre being our elf this year,â North called out as she trudged through the snow toward the back door of the Inn. He was adjusting the blades on the huge wooden sleigh they used every Christmas Eve, a big wrench in his gloved hand.
âI literally just found out. How did you hear so fast?â It had only been minutes since Everley had taken Josh to the Jingle Bell Theater to try on the Santa outfit. But that was Winterville for you, word always got around fast.
âYou need a hand there?â she asked North. âWhat are you doing anyway?â
âJust checking it out for rust. Oiling the parts that need a little grease and tightening the parts that arenât meant to move. Itâs pretty simple, really.â
âIt is for you. You were always good with your hands.â
As the eldest of all the cousins, North had always been their ringleader. When they were young heâd plan elaborate games for them to play. Eskimos and Polar bears was his favorite. The Eskimos would build their igloos then the polar bears would invade and under a barrage of snowballs do their best to tear the homes down. North was always a polar bear.
And he always won.
âOkay, hand me the oil,â North instructed, holding out his hand as Holly passed the bottle into his grasp. He leaned forward, squeezing some of the clear liquid onto the axles, then wiping it with a rag. âIs it true that the new guy is going to be Santa?â
Holly bit down a smile, remembering Joshâs expression. âYeah, he kind of got pressured into it.â
âI guess itâll be just the two of you in the sleigh, huh?â North lifted an eyebrow. âYouâll want to keep an eye on him.â
Holly tipped her head to the side. âI will? Why?â
North cleared his throat and shrugged. âI just get the feeling heâs a bit of a ladiesâ man.â
A half-smile flitted over Hollyâs lips. âHow could you get that feeling? Youâve met him exactly once. While throwing snowballs at him.â
âI ran into him again after breakfast.â North shrugged.
âAnd what was he doing that gave you the impression heâs a womanizer?â There was a strange twisty feeling in Hollyâs stomach. She didnât like that North was wary of Josh. Her cousin was a straight down the line kind of guy. He didnât judge people harshly.
Not usually anyway.
âNothing important,â North mumbled, his cheeks staining red. âJust watch him, thatâs all.â
âHeâs leaving later,â Holly pointed out. Her stomach tightened again. âSo I donât think thereâs anything to worry about.â
North pulled his hand from beneath the sleigh and looked right at her. âHol, you know as well as I do that⦠certain things⦠only take a few minutes.â
He looked so uncomfortable that she wanted to laugh. âA few minutes?â she asked, her eyebrows lifting. âI thought you were better than that. Somebody better tell the poor women of Winterville that you have performance issues.â
âShut up.â He pulled his gaze from hers, his cheeks redder than ever. âYou know what I mean.
