“Hey Hol, I hear you’re being our elf this year,” North called out as she trudged through the snow toward the back door of the Inn. He was adjusting the blades on the huge wooden sleigh they used every Christmas Eve, a big wrench in his gloved hand.

“I literally just found out. How did you hear so fast?” It had only been minutes since Everley had taken Josh to the Jingle Bell Theater to try on the Santa outfit. But that was Winterville for you, word always got around fast.

“You need a hand there?” she asked North. “What are you doing anyway?”

“Just checking it out for rust. Oiling the parts that need a little grease and tightening the parts that aren’t meant to move. It’s pretty simple, really.”

“It is for you. You were always good with your hands.”

As the eldest of all the cousins, North had always been their ringleader. When they were young he’d plan elaborate games for them to play. Eskimos and Polar bears was his favorite. The Eskimos would build their igloos then the polar bears would invade and under a barrage of snowballs do their best to tear the homes down. North was always a polar bear.

And he always won.

“Okay, hand me the oil,” North instructed, holding out his hand as Holly passed the bottle into his grasp. He leaned forward, squeezing some of the clear liquid onto the axles, then wiping it with a rag. “Is it true that the new guy is going to be Santa?”

Holly bit down a smile, remembering Josh’s expression. “Yeah, he kind of got pressured into it.”

“I guess it’ll be just the two of you in the sleigh, huh?” North lifted an eyebrow. “You’ll want to keep an eye on him.”

Holly tipped her head to the side. “I will? Why?”

North cleared his throat and shrugged. “I just get the feeling he’s a bit of a ladies’ man.”

A half-smile flitted over Holly’s lips. “How could you get that feeling? You’ve met him exactly once. While throwing snowballs at him.”

“I ran into him again after breakfast.” North shrugged.

“And what was he doing that gave you the impression he’s a womanizer?” There was a strange twisty feeling in Holly’s stomach. She didn’t like that North was wary of Josh. Her cousin was a straight down the line kind of guy. He didn’t judge people harshly.

Not usually anyway.

“Nothing important,” North mumbled, his cheeks staining red. “Just watch him, that’s all.”

“He’s leaving later,” Holly pointed out. Her stomach tightened again. “So I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.”

North pulled his hand from beneath the sleigh and looked right at her. “Hol, you know as well as I do that… certain things… only take a few minutes.”

He looked so uncomfortable that she wanted to laugh. “A few minutes?” she asked, her eyebrows lifting. “I thought you were better than that. Somebody better tell the poor women of Winterville that you have performance issues.”

“Shut up.” He pulled his gaze from hers, his cheeks redder than ever. “You know what I mean.
