CHAPTER 17

Christian

Charleigh and I walked into the room where Mrs. Lawson and her husband were.

“Mrs. Lawson. Mr. Lawson. I’m Dr. Christian Kind.” I extended my hand to them.

“It’s nice to meet you, Dr. Kind.” They shook my hand.

“So, Charleigh tells me you want to have a baby.”

“Yes. It’s been two years since my heart transplant,” Lucy spoke.

“I’ve reviewed your lab results, and everything looks good. With that being said, a couple more tests need to be done.”

“What kinds of tests?” she asked.

“An echocardiogram and a coronary angiogram. I need to make sure there are no signs of rejection and that the graft is functioning normally. I’m going to be honest with you right from the start. If there is any indication that your graft isn’t functioning at full capacity, I will have to discourage you from trying to get pregnant. I already blocked out enough time if you want to get the tests done today. It’s up to you.”

“Yes. I want everything done as soon as possible so we can start trying,” Lucy said.

“Okay. Charleigh will get you to the Cath lab and prepped, and I’ll see you soon.” I smiled. “Let me know when she’s ready,” I told Charleigh.

I went to the rooftop to grab a coffee and saw Jackson there.

“Hey, bro.” I walked up from behind. “In-between surgeries?”

“Hey.” He smiled. “Yeah. I have to scrub in for my next one in twenty minutes. What about you?”

“I’m waiting for Charleigh to page me. I’m doing an echo and coronary angiogram on a woman who is two years post-transplant. She and her husband want to have a baby.”

“Hope it works out for them,” he said.

“Me too.”

My pager went off, and when I glanced at it, Lucy was prepped and ready.

“Have to go, bro. I’ll see you later.” I placed my hand on his shoulder.

After scrubbing in, I walked into the Cath lab.

“I’ll do the echocardiogram first, and then we’ll start the angiogram. Are you okay?” I asked Lucy.

“Yeah. Just a bit nervous.” She smiled.

“Don’t be.” I gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “When I’m done with the tests, you’ll be taken to a recovery room for a couple of hours, and I’ll see you and your husband in there with the results.”

“Everything looked good, yeah?” Charleigh said as she followed me out.

“Yes.” I smiled. “Everything is functioning how it should be, and she’s cleared to go ahead and start trying for a baby.”

When Charleigh and I arrived home, she went to Georgia’s, and I went down to the beach where my brothers and cousins were. I smiled when I walked up and saw Sebastian holding Noah.

“How’s he doing?” I asked as I took the seat next to him.

“He’s doing good. Want to hold him?”

“Sure.” I smiled as he handed him over to me.

“That’s going to be me soon.” Conner grinned. “I can’t wait to hold my daughter.”

“Speaking of,” Nathan said. “Have you and Charlotte picked a name?”

“We have. Isabella Eve Kind. Eve is after Charlotte’s mother.”

“It’s a beautiful name, bro.” I smiled as I glanced at him.
