Cody knew she probably wasn’t coming back and he sarcastically wished her luck finding someplace to sleep. She had surely smashed his ego. He would feign hurt next time they talked. Right now, he was going to take advantage of having a comfortable bed to sleep in.

Keelie wandered around slowly in the darkness, not wanting to go too far from the children, yet not wanting to be close enough to be found. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness and the moon peeked out from behind some clouds, she spotted a log under some trees about forty yards from her wagon. There were tall bushes between here and the wagon, but she should still be able to hear if the children cried out.
