Thank God heâd found Bullet in time. Heâd discovered his horse perfectly content, nibbling on the grass as if nothing had happened. The animal couldâve been attacked by predators or claimed by natives if theyâd come across the creature.
Jack ran his hands over Bullet, examining him for injuries. To his relief, there were only a few scrapes on his body and a gash on his leg that wasnât too deep but would keep him from carrying anyone on his back for days. He breathed a sigh of relief and gave the animalâs neck an affectionate pat as he thanked him for being brave.
Jack hesitated, thinking about Amelia and how sheâd reacted when heâd told her about searching for Bullet. Heâd been so sure it wouldnât have bothered her to leave her behind, but sheâd been visibly shaken. Perhaps sheâd just been exhausted after their journey back to the wagon train. Taking a deep breath, he started walking back towards camp with Bullet following behind him as he held the reins loosely by his side.
The other men who had come to help were already far ahead on the trail, but he could still make out their figures in the distance. Jack had taken the time to tend the wound while they started back. Now, he continued his pace, knowing he had to get Bullet home safely but at a speed that didnât hurt his animal companion.

Heâd seen it all. Jack had experienced his fair share of hardships, tragedies, and losses. In fact, heâd even been the cause of some. Heâd turned into a lonely, broke cowboy hopping from job to job until the latest payday fell into his lap. Back in the day, with his old ways, he wouldnât have cared how he got paid. But things were different now. For some reason, Ameliaâs sad, searching eyes burned themselves into his mind. The look she gave when he left still did something to his gut.
When they arrived back at the camp, most of the wagon train was already asleep. He could make out a few figures that were still up, tending to their horses and preparing bedding for the night. Jack thanked the men for their help and continued toward the wagon theyâd been offered for the night.
Jack hesitated when he saw it, considering what might await him. Amelia had been frustrated when he left, so she might not be too pleased to see him. But exhaustion overwhelmed him. He decided to take the chance and stepped forward tentatively, steeling himself before approaching the wagonâs entrance.
He peered inside, finding Amelia asleep beneath a quilt, her body still as she lay on her side. The lack
