Yesterday, when I’d taken Shelter to the park. Pearl and her friends were there too. They were hanging out by the swings without actually swinging on them – talk about not getting in the swing of things. Pearl must have seen my backpack and remembered my homework was in there. While I was busy watching my best friend commit ball murder, she reached into my bag, grabbed my homework, and took a photo on her phone so she could copy it later.

The perfect crime.

Then came the rain. I went back for my bag and Pearl slinked off into the woods behind the park. She went home and copied my homework, eager to pass it off as her own. Except Pearl knew that Miss Adwell wasn’t an idiot (not like Mr Dunderhead.) The more she thought about it, the more Pearl realised that Miss Adwell would be able to tell that she’d copied my homework. She couldn’t shake the fear of being found out. I had a feeling Pearl didn’t sleep a wink. (Although if it’s a wink it’s already a bad sleep – it needs to be at least a blink, or you’ve still got one eye open.) Either way, Pearl knew that if she was going to get away with copying my homework, she’d have to cover her tracks. And that meant getting rid of the evidence. And that meant committing the crime right under, or at least relatively near, my nose.
