Chapter Twenty-Three

Sarah DeLucia sat on the beach, staring out at the slight waves and the sky that came together as one off in the distance. When her rapist was not on the island, they had come to let her roam free; it wasn’t as if she could go anywhere. This place was beautiful, she had to admit. She collected shells and played wherever she wanted, as long as she never tried to enter the adult side of the island. She wondered where “here” was, anyway. She started to wonder what her friends were doing. They would be entering junior high school, maybe playing volleyball or even going to a dance or two. Then she thought of boys, and her mood darkened, because she knew what boys did when they grew up.

Boys grew up to be men, and men touched girls where they should not be touched. She had seen her parents together once when she was little. They were all naked and acting like they were having fun in the bathroom. Her mom had a talk with her about love and men and making babies; she said that they would have a talk when she was a little older, but she didn’t need a talk anymore. Her mom had lied, because HE told her it was love that they shared, but it hurt — it hurt badly, and he did it anyway.

But he wasn’t here now. No need to cry any more. It never helped anyhow.

Her stomach growled, and she threw a handful of sand at the water and walked inside to see the cook.

As she entered the large sitting area and bar, she came across Abrahim. He wasn’t bad, but she hated Malik, who was never far behind. He looked evil, like someone out of a movie.

“Ah, the little princess.” He placed his hands palms up at hip height, taking in her visage. “Tell me, is today the day you swim to freedom?” He smiled and took her chin in his hand, lifting it, forcing her to look at him. “Another young child is coming today. Maybe she is your replacement — I don’t know — but maybe you could soothe her and keep her company.”

“If I have to.” She pulled her face away and went up to the barstool to ask for a sandwich.

“She is much younger than when you came here. I am sure she will need a friend.” And Abrahim walked away to do whatever he did as warden to this beautiful prison.

Sarah could remember when she had first arrived, ten years old, drugged for days and feeling so alone. She remembered feeling like she could roll into a ball and disappear. But she couldn’t, no matter how hard she tried, and now she dreamed of becoming someone who could get away from this place — Wonder Woman or Lara Croft, maybe. Her hatred for the people who’d done this to her simmered just under the surface.
