On the wagon ride back to Priscilla's house, Annabeth couldn't help but relive the last few hours. Her cheeks went hot every time she thought about her husband making love to her. Sure, she'd enjoyed the physical pleasure of a relationship, but the depth of the feelings that had engulfed her once Benjamin set his hands on her had amazed her.
They'd made love on the bed in what would be the room they shared. Sunlight had streamed across their bodies, highlighting the dust motes floating through the room. She wondered if it had affected Ben as strongly as it had her. Heat had flooded through her whenever he looked at her.
"I am seriously contemplating pulling the wagon to the side of the road and finding a spot where I can have my way with you again if you don't stop looking like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you've recently enjoyed bed sport and wouldn't mind doing it again post haste."
She blushed even more and ducked her head.
"Do you want to?" She hated the uncertainty that crept into her voice.
He chuckled though it sounded strangled. "That, my love, is a very silly question."
She knew her parents engaged in regular sex but she'd never been brave enough to ask her mother whether she enjoyed it. Ellsbeth hadn't been around long enough after marrying Henry for her to ask. When they'd been to Newport last October, she'd been busy getting the furniture out of the house and getting it ready to sell.
There wasn't anyone for her to ask.
"I enjoyed it very much and you will have a difficult time keeping me out of your bed the next few nights."
"Considering you've already been sleeping in it, with the exception of last night, I don't see how that will be a problem, Ben. Why did you sleep in the other room?"
He clucked to the horses to pick up their pace. They were nearing Priscilla's house.
"You seemed like you needed time alone. I knew you would tell me about what you and Todd talked about when you were ready. I didn't want you to feel pressured to tell me right then."
"I appreciate that. I'm still not sure having him give a message to Ellsbeth was the right thing, but it's been bothering me that she didn't know where we'd gone."
He reached over and patted her thigh. She laid her hand on top of his. It felt nice to be able to touch him without worrying about whether it was right to do so.
As they rounded the bend in the road near the house, Benjamin concentrated on the horse and took the wagon around to the back of the house, like he'd done the day they'd arrived. A strange horse was tied up in front of the house. Benjamin let out a deep sigh.
"You know who that horse belongs to?"
"Yes. Jenkins. I wanted to confront him at his house. Why is he here?"
They entered through the rear door. The voices she'd expected to hear coming from the kitchen came from the drawing room instead.
