CHAPTER 7

Alita stared at the mirror the next morning, wishing away the dark circles under her eyes. She needed sleep; at this point her body craved it. Good, deep sleep undisturbed by nightmares of blood and death.

She’d barely gotten dressed when someone knocked on her door. She opened it to find Drew standing there, looking sheepish.

“Good morning,” he said in a gentle voice. “I just wanted to tell you that I’m sorry about yesterday. I didn’t mean what I said about you acting childishly.”

A small battle occurred within Alita. She wanted to accept his apology and forget everything that happened the day before, but at the same time she felt the apology did nothing to solve the underlying problem, or solve the mystery of what had happened to her clothes.

In the end, her desire for harmony won out. “I’m sorry, too,” she told him. “Let’s just forget it.”

He beamed at her. “I’m so glad you feel that way. Listen, why don’t the two of us get out of here for a few hours today? I’d love to show you some of my favorite places.”

“That sounds great. Can you get away right after breakfast?”

“Absolutely,” he assured her, then gave her a quick kiss on the lips. “Shall we head downstairs and eat?”

“I thought you always had a tray brought up,” Alita said.

Drew shrugged and offered his arm. “I thought I’d try things your way.”

Alita took his arm. “I’m all yours.”

He kissed her again. “I know.”

As they headed downstairs, she asked, “Would it be possible for me to move into another room?”

“What’s wrong with the one you’re in?” He looked down at her, his brow furrowed.

“I don’t know,” Alita said, unsure how honest she could be about the dreams. “I’m not sleeping well. Maybe a different room would be better.”

Drew didn’t answer her for several steps. She peeked at him through her lashes. His face seemed thoughtful, if a little troubled.

“I’ll ask Mother. I know she mentioned that most of the other rooms were being prepared for the wedding guests, but there may be a way we can move you.” He leaned down and whispered, “Are you certain it’s not because I’m in just the next room?” His waggled eyebrows left her no doubt as to his train of thought.

She laughed, delighted by his flirting. “No, that’s not it. The room I’m in just has a negative feel to it.”

She’d said the wrong thing, apparently, because Drew’s flirtatious demeanor vanished. “You haven’t been listening to gossip, have you?”

“What do you mean?”

Drew sighed in annoyance. “There’s a silly legend about that room and something that supposedly happened centuries ago. I’m certain it’s something the MacGregor’s invented for the tourists, but there are those who pass the story around like actual fact.”

Since James Black hadn’t told Alita much regarding the room, Alita could honestly respond, “I haven’t heard a story.” Just a snippet.

“It’s utter nonsense, so you aren’t missing anything,” he said. “I just wish the story would die out.”

Alita thought of her dreams, and how there had to be more to it than just some made-up story.
